Video Game Rape Fest

In the new video game Bulletstorm due February 22, players are rewarded for shooting enemies in the private parts (such as the buttocks). There’s an excess of profanity, of course, including frequent use of F-words. And Bulletstorm is particularly gruesome, with body parts that explode all over the screen.

But that's not the worst part.

The in-game awards system, called Skill Shots, ties the ugly, graphic violence into explicit sex acts: "topless" means cutting a player in half, while a "gang bang" means killing multiple enemies. And with kids as young as 9 playing such games, the experts FoxNews.com spoke with were nearly universally worried that video game violence may be reaching a fever pitch.

...

Carol Lieberman, a psychologist and book author, told FoxNews.com that sexual situations and acts in video games -- highlighted so well in Bulletstorm -- have led to real-world sexual violence.

“The increase in rapes can be attributed in large part to the playing out of [sexual] scenes in video games,” she said.

That article is just full of lies and unsupportable assertions, isn't it?

It kicks off just right, too, with "An artist's recreation of a scene from controversial video game Bulletstorm, which takes violence, vulgar language and sexual innuendos to a new level."
The FCC monitors all TV broadcasts and stiffly fines broadcasters for violating decency rules...
No, it really doesn't. The FCC pretty much waits until somebody whines, then levies fines.
“The increase in rapes can be attributed in large part to the playing out of [sexual] scenes in video games”...
a) What increase in rapes?
b) What study is it that found even a correlation between rape and "sexual scenes in video games," let alone causation/attribution?

For what it's worth, here's the Wikiality of US rape statistics:
According to the National Crime Victimization Survey, the adjusted per-capita victimization rate of rape has declined from about 2.4 per 1000 people (age 12 and above) in 1980 (that is, 2.4 persons from each 1000 people 12 and older were raped during that year) to about 0.4 per 1000 people, a decline of about 85%.

A similar study was conducted regarding an alleged "increase in rapes" after Custer's Revenge came out. Like this "study", it too was farted into a Rubbermaid bucket in an outhouse.

I played the demo of Bulletstorm and it's very fun. I'll probably buy the game unless it's very short. The article and opinions of these "experts" is predictably stupid. First off there are no sexual scenes in Bulletstorm unless you count shooting the bad guys in the nuts. The only thing relating it to sex is the names of the finishing moves. Oooh scary. I'm sure seeing "gag reflex" over a killed enemy is going to cause uncontrollable rape rape.

+1 copy of bulletstorm sold.

I didn't buy "Left 4 Dead 2" until I heard the Australian government derided it for promoting discrimination against victims of viral infections. :D

For immediate release.

"The makers of Bulletstorm would like to express our thanks and undying graditude to Fox News for their tireless effort to increase our sales beyond our wildest dreams.

Thanks!"

Signed,

The makers of Bulletstorm.

This is absolutely horrifying.

I think this perfectly supports my point that people should have to gain proper licensing before becoming parents.

Nice pic under your name, Hellbound.

It's from the same game as this one, is it not?

"With the Bloody Mess perk, characters and creatures you kill will often explode into a red, gut-ridden, eyeball-strewn paste. Fun! Oh, and you'll do 5% extra damage with all weapons."

The game sounds interesting. I am glad Fox News advertised it. I may have to purchase a copy now.

So this is the same Bulletstorm that has an M rating in the States, just to make sure that stupid parents "think of the children" and don't buy it as little Jimmy's 8th birthday present?

Try out the demo if you are interested. It's short but fun and will give you an idea of how it plays. It also looks very good. The only strange thing is there is no jumping in the game. Kind of weird. You can download it if you have an xbox or ps3. I don't think there is a pc demo but it will also be released on the pc.

A violent video game, where you can shoot off body parts and cut people in two in killing sprees, but the worst part is calling the moves "topless" and "gang bang"?!?!

Only in America.

Bulletstorm looks a lot like a better version of borderlands, so it should be pretty decent.

Just a friendly note: They said exactly the same things about "race" music, rock and roll and Elvis Presley in the 50s, Mick Jagger, the Stones, Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin and the Hippies in the sixtis/early seventies, Rap and early video games in the 80s. Tired old etc..................

Which does not mean I don't agree with the licensing thing - I do think you are right on that!!!

Oh please. More outrage from the moral guardians about violent video games?

We've heard this story before, and this article doesn't provide any better evidence.

I particularly like the title of the article, "Is Bulletstorm the Worst Video Game in the World?" The answer to that question, of course, is a resounding "no", particularly if we count computer games as well.

Okay, so apparently I need to put the word "SARCASM" in giant flashing neon letters.

*sigh*

My point was that even if everythign they said about the game was 100% true, the issue here is not one of the game makers (who correctly labelled the game as for mature audiences) but an issue of parents who are so inept and unfit that they would allow a hypothetical game about rape in the hands of their 9 year old children.

I'm sure seeing "gag reflex" over a killed enemy is going to cause uncontrollable rape rape.

Just reading that sentence turned me from a peaceful gentleman dedicated to women's rights into an uncontrollable sex criminal.

One day, we humans will evolve to the point where we aren't obsessed with vicarious sex and violence. It'll take a few million years and near-famine conditions but we'll get there.

In the meantime, I am so stoked that this is coming out in time for the husband's birthday.
