Because as far as I now I'm the ONLY Vermont skeptic attending TAM 3, I feel I need to do something on behalf of my state.

So, the first five people who respond to this post and are going to be at TAM will receive a bottle of pure Vermont maple syrup made in a sugar shack near my house. This stuff retails for up to $50 a gallon. It takes forty gallons of sap to make one gallon of syrup.

At your option, I will be willing to substitute for Maple Sugar Candy, but I honestly can't stand the stuff.

Any takers?

Oh I want one,but I can get NH Maple syrup....

so maybe you'd better give it to someone else...

Could you please give mine to Brown? He designedour great tshirts and deserves this!

Mr.Randi also has a thing for syrup!

If you were to bring Mr. Randi some VT maple syrup he'd be very grateful.

He loves his pancakes with plenty of butter and syrup! None of this diet stuff for Mr. Randi!

Mom-- we live practically in Vermont. We can get our own syrup! In fact, there's probably some in the cabinet!

Looking forward to meeting you at TAM! Anyone who is excited about and proud of maple syrup is right up my alley!

How's the weather up there in New England, by the way?

Best,
Kitten

While I'd love to have it (especially if it's Light or Extra Light grade) I'm going to Canada after TAM - and Canadians bringing foreign maple syrup into Canada is a crime punishable by death, at a minimum exile. ;)

Maybe a bunch of us can meet for breakfast and split a jug of syrup over pancakes? I love real maple syrup! :D

I'm the 5th person??

Hey, me! I don't think my mom and dad have ever tried, so I'd give them after getting something for me. We don't do pancakes, however, but we'll find a way. :) Thanks!!!

WHen Kitten took maple syrup to Jordan they put it on ice cream. That works well. You can also add it to cookies, well in baking them.

Still one bottle left!

OK, let me see if I can get this organized.

1) Suzelod gets a bottle. We'll have to figure out how to meet each other.

2) Renata gets a bottle (and I'm certainly willing to partake of some ginger cookies. :D )

3) KittyNH gets a bottle, which will be given to Brown because a- she's willing to accept the inferior NH product and b- because he deserves it. I'll need help figuring out who Brown is.

4a) Kitten is entitled to a bottle, but prefers not to given her proximity to Southern VT. However, her excellent suggestion to give Randi some will be followed. And I won't count that one against the original 5.

4b) Triangle Man is entitled to a bottle, but the fact that he'd settle for the Canadian stuff, and the Fancy Light Grade at that disqualifies him. HOWEVER..he had an excellent suggestion for a breakfast sampling, where he can learn the error of his ways. I'll supply the syrup if we can arrange a breakfast meeting. My schedule is TAM's schedule.

4c) Luciana gets bottle number 4. Up here in the wild North, we pour the stuff on snow and wait until it hardens like taffy and then eat it like that. Often with a sour pickle. Don't ask me; I've only lived here a year. It's also good mixed in with yogurt, vanilla pudding, baked beans, ham, and there's even a spa here that offers Maple body rubs. I've also seen it used as paper glue, wasp bait (for traps) and lately it's being used to make premium Vodka. The same company also makes Vodka made out of milk, Vermont's other product.

5) Well, we still have one bottle left!! The next poster can have it.

DISCLAIMER: I am required by state law to defend the integrity of Vermont's only major export {Ben & Jerry's not withstanding} against the products of all other states and countries. No offense intended.

Sadly, we have no snow. :( It has been unseasonably warm and we're having an early mud season. There's hope of a storm tonight, however. I'd be happy if it snowed until TAM, stopped just long enough for the airport to let me leave, and then continued snowing until i got back. :)

The weather in Vegas doesn't look to good either. :rs:

Ugh. What awful weather.

If it's cold, I want beautiful snow.

I don't feel so bad about missing winter, then. Florida is sunny and warm!

Now, now, I specifically stated I love maple syrup, I just can't take it with me. If I was being snobbish about US syrup I wouldn't have even suggested breakfast.

Yay! :D

Have I missed my chance? I've just ran out of my last bottle from my last trip to the USA as well....

Darat, You got it...I'm sure! I can get good maple anytime, I think... The stores here have some good stuff.

Darat receives the last bottle.

I'm pleased there was so much interest. I'd bring more, but with the books I'm bringing for the JREF book sale, I'm nearing airlines weight limits.

THANKS! I owe you at least a drink.

So breakfast?

I bought a sampler pack of syrup today so that we could have a breakfast tasting, and everyone who wanted to could try the four basic grades of syrup (Fancy Grade, Grade A Medium, Grade A Dark, and Grade B). And then they could also compare with whatever the Stardust serves.

When and where?

I suggest we meet at the Stardust's Island Paradise, Saturday Morning at 8:00am. How does that sound? I have enough sample syrup for at least 10 people.

Island Paradise

I tap my own maples and make my own syrup. It is curious though that most people I know (including myself) go for the darker more robust grades rather than the fancy lighter syrups.

I think it's because we've been brought up on Aunt Jemima and Log Cabin types of syrup. I don't know if they have any maple syrup in them at all, probably corn syrup with imitation flavorings. But they are darker and sweeter and they are what we are used to.

By the way Jeff, I don't have any sugar maples on my property only red maples, so the ratio is about 50 gal. of sap to 1 gal. of syrup.

Sounds good, I'll be there. :)

Maybe you should start a separate thread announcing it?

I generally prefer lighter grades, such as Extra Light (US grade light amber) and Light (US grade medium). This site says US grade medium is the most popular for table syrup.

That said I'll take any grade of maple syrup over other types of syrup.

Helpful hint for tourists in Canada. Buy your maple syrup at a grocery store, you'll probably pay half what you'd pay at those overpriced souvenir shops. (Unless you can get it straight from the producer of course)
