Split Thread Venezuela opens Bolivar's tomb - split from Venezuela at the crossroads thread

Myself, I'm not a very "patriotic" person. I don't believe in "nationalism" and such, and I didn't really care that Chavez changed the number of stars in my flag or that he changed the name of Venezuela to Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.

But this... this is an insult to all of us. This is outrageous.

Love to see how the Chavez fans will defend this.
Hugo insults the remains of a hero not only to Venezuela but all of South America in a batcrap crazy effort to porve a crackpot conspiracy theory. Nice.
Maybe he can interest Oliver Stone in doing a movie.........

I am not defending the action, but what is there to insult ? It is a *CORPSE*. A heap of dead flesh. There is nothing special or holy on it. When i am dead , you can play with my corpse as much as you wish, use the head as football, the leg as doorstep.

You can't insult remains. You can't desecrate what isn't sacred to begin with. What is maybe with that hero sacred is not the CORPSE, what is at best sacred are the memory people have of the persons, the memory of their actions, what they did. In other word, yell at Chavez for maybe trying to manipulate that, Yell at Chavez for being a CT.

By the way :

South American independence leader Simón Bolívar (1783-1830), according to Dr. Paul Auwaerter from the Division of Infectious Diseases in the Department of Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, may have died due to chronic arsenic poisoning further complicated by bronchiectasis and lung cancer.[34][35] Dr. Auwaerter has considered murder and acute arsenic poisoning unlikely, arguing that gradual "environmental contact with arsenic would have been entirely possible" as a result of drinking contaminated water in Peru or through the medicinal use of arsenic -which was common at the time- as Bolívar had reportedly resorted to it during the treatment for some of his illnesses

So being completely offbase it isn't. Does it warrant an exhumation ? I dunno. But it was certainly done on other celeberity to determine long after their death the cause of death.

No, I understand, and I don't think there's anything sacred to a corpse. But when you've lived and grown up in Venezuela all these years, and seen how it has gradually become more and more a third world country where ANYTHING outrageous can happen, you start wondering "Is there any limit to this insanity?? Like... at all?????"

It is, since just about only conceivable way he could be murdered that could still be determined by the exhumation is explained away in your quote.

Let's see what their "forensic" examination will determine. If it's murder by poisoning with arsenic, this will be fairly ample evidence of Chavez manipulating the results of the examination in his favor.

I can only ask: What POSSIBLE benefit is it to ANYONE TODAY how Simon Bolivar died in 1830? His numerous attributes and achievements in his lifetime are what he is renowned for, not his reeking bones.

Let's say it IS determined someone killed him. So what? The world has moved on a LONG way since 1830.

Is Chavez looking to emulate Bolivar in some way? Good idea. Bolivar is dead...

I think it is not a south American , but a general dictatorial tradition : when the economy and the society suffer due to the dictatorship, shift the attention of people onto other stuff.

Yes, I can see that.

Are there any other interesting examples from dictatorial governments that did stuff as outrageous as this one?

IMHO it can be argued that the most well known is the Hitler dictatorship of germany from 1933 to 1945, which used the jew in this way. That would be the most outrageous one. Then again I am not a specialist so maybe an history buff will correct me on that.
