James Van Praagh looks to be sinking to a new low in manipulating the bereaved. He seems to be asking the parents of dead children to help him write his next book. This from an email he just sent out:

Dear Friends...

I am currently working on a new book which will feature messages from children in spirit to their parents and family. Throughout the years so many of you have sent me emails and letters or posted messages on my Message Board telling of the incredible experience you had during readings I have given you that brought through your children. The affirmation of love and the joy these stories gave me has been wonderful.

If you would like to contribute to my new book I would be grateful if you would send me a description of any specific detailed messages I shared with you from your child at one of my seminars, demonstrations or in a private session.

I am especially interested in those experiences that changed your life, your relationships, or your health in a positive way and how these changes may have lasted over time.

Be as descriptive as you can and if possible include the date of the reading and/or where the reading was shared. Some people may want to write it as a story, some as an essay or letter, etc. Choose a format that is most comfortable for you.

Translation:

I am so burnt out writing these manipulative tear-jerking lies that I need your help with this one. I'm hoping that people's own words about their dead children will tug on just the right heartstrings to make a best-seller this time!

Hmm... Is this something he did in the past?
If not, why the change?

I mean, surely inventing stuff up that can't be verified would be much easier and it's not like he can't hire ghost writers or something.

I wonder what sort of responses he will get?
- Quantity
- Vague or specific
- Standard of English
- How true they are
- Fakes, satire, spoofs, etc

It is a perfect way to garner an even bigger fan base. What could be more effective salesmanship than an entire book full of testimonials written by fans? That's assuming the letters really are written by people other than Van Praagh himself.

I note he didn't require that any of the testimonials be backed up by tape recording or video. So... "Send me the way you think you remember how it went, and let's tell everyone how it changed your life!" Written in the guise of inspirational stories, of course.

I'm sure that the way they remember the reading is much more emotionally appealing than the actual reading would be.

I know I shouldn't be shocked by vile depths to which these frauds will sink, but I find myself horrified and stunned nonetheless.

Seconding Burning Beard's comment.

I admit I was tempted to send him a spoof one.
Everyone on this forum should send him a spoof one. Then after he publishes, get Randi to show they are all spoof. On TV. On Oprah.

It would be SO cool! :D

I'm betting on it. Because it should make him think twice about ANY reports he receives from his "flock". Hopefully it will make him think twice about even going ahead.

From the OP...

and if possible include the date of the reading and/or where the reading was shared.

He'll probably check his videotape to make sure he's not being scammed.

I'm not sure I approve of the thought of mass-spoofing him.

My initial impulse was not to send him an account he would include so i could reveal it later as a spoof. It was to send him something like an account of a "child in spirit" saying unflattering things about his abilities.
