Bit late to this thread ... but anyway ...
In my 50's I was starting to show signs of illness that wasn't going to get better with time so ...
Me and my wife decided to go round the world for a year, sort of backpacking but with a small suitcase each and mostly staying in places a step or two up on hostels.

On our travels we met loads of younger Americans doing the same sort of thing. I was amazed how many of them travelled with a maple leaf flag sewn to their rucksack. I asked why and was constantly told that it made their life on the road easier.

A few years earlier I spent a fairly long time recording music with various people in the Bay Area. My english accent ensured that I was invited to so many parties and stuff so that my US friends could show off their "Brit" pals. It was a great time.

I've no idea what that shows except my US friends had very wealthy friends so the hospitality was excellent. Of course all of them were commie liberals.

I do love Mike's framing of that, though- "moving to stop..." There's a right way and a wrong way to do that. The first involves leaving it up to courts to rule on the issue, and, if that doesn't come out how you'd like, go through the process of amending the Constitution. Letting a president have the right by executive-order fiat to decide the issue how you want? That's the wrong way- you might even say it's the unconstitutional way.

Rising wealth inequality is the reason populist right wing parties are doing so well everywhere. All mainstream parties can offer is the non-solution of "growth". It's a non-solution because we've exceeded the limits of what our planet can support. The only way to tackle wealth inequality is to redistribute wealth more fairly. Developed economies need to give up on growth in GDP and use more useful metrics for human flourishing. I don't think either are going to happen.

The US is just the first big country to fall to right wing populists. They'll be in charge in many more countries over the next decade or two as climate change and environmental degradation increase the cost of living, whilst at the same time everyone except the ultra-wealthy get poorer.
