I can only hope. If we get Obama back in, and he appoints two to the SCOTUS, then I think so.

That is the huge issue here. Control of SCOTUS for the next couple decades.

I'm hoping he can nominate THREE to the court, and I hope they are all close to the youngest people ever to sit on the court.

I wonder if the GOP could filibuster the nominees for four years. They'll certainly try. Heck, there are still a bunch of Federal Judge nominees being blocked.

Obama would most likely withdraw the nomination and nominate someone else in that case. (That's wrt Supreme Court nominees. It's a little different story with other judges.)

If they felt strongly enough, Democrats could invoke the "nuclear option" to do away with the Senate filibuster. I doubt that would happen--at least not over a Supreme Court nomination. Generally, objections are only if the nominee has some big serious flaw (or what can be sold as such).

Many in the GOP don't want to win simply by campaigning. By any means necessary. Even if it means driving the nation into a ditch by putting the defeat of Obama as priority #1. And yes, that WAS the stated priority. Not job creation. Not health care. Not the deficit. Not the debt. 4 years of obstruction and games.

So now that it is election time we've got to make it as difficult as we can for people to vote because that favors Republicans.

Surely though, this new system is still too difficult. Actually expecting people to plan for and expend energy in the voting process will disenfranchise somebody somewhere. I propose a new system, which will ensure full participation:

- the government installs a microphone in the home of all citizens
- at any point from the inauguration of the current president through "election day", a citizen may elect to
- momentarily put down the Cheetos, Nintendo controller, and bong, then
- addressing the installed microphone, speak the name of their chosen candidate
- boom, voting complete

The fact that there was not one dissenting voice on the SCOTUS, not even hard core conservative judges like Scalia or Thomas, shows us two things:

1. It shows just how vacuous are the arguments made by those pushing this misguided law/rule in the first place, and

2. It shows just how extreme some on the right have become.

mikedenk, if you cannot handle living in a modern democracy, I suggest moving. I hear Saudi Arabia is nice.

I am not understanding this. In India, polling day is a general holiday so everyone gets to exercise their franchise without fear of losing a paid working day. Why is tis not followed in the US?

Ok, I'll rephrase it.

A single youth with a computer may hack the voting system and vote many thousands of times for whichever party promises to legalize all drugs. It won't be voter fraud because said youth has a valid drivers license.
