US/Canada Trade War ?

This another rinse and repeat, how is it grandstanding?

Trump's using it to try and look like he's a tough international negotiator. Someone who wasn't grandstanding would have let the matter run its usual course.

And how does it look like Canada is getting a better deal?

Trump's making a fool of himself and to save face will have to make concessions on lumber and dairy..

Oh opinion, got it. No he's doing exactly what he should be doing to get a better deal. Your side just crys about everything he does, which has elevated it.

No, actually he isnt. I'm sure it looks that way to people who are losing money in this. And certainly concessions will have to be made, that is compromise. 30 years in business, you should know how this works.

Yep, the US will make lots of noise, maybe go to the arbitration board again, and nothing will change.

NAFTA and the Canada-US Free Trade Deal have been too good to all parties overall to risk. Essentially the US is going to have to adjust its own business practices to compete in certain industries, or it's going to need to focus its industries in areas where it is competitive.

Trump is playing games. He has no idea what a trade agreement is. It is simply a list of things to trade or exclude from trade.

He has, or someone for him, finally come out tostate some conditions:
”Mr. Trump has repeatedly said he would pull the U.S. out of Nafta if the partner countries don’t agree on a new version with mechanisms designed to balance trade in the bloc. The Trump administration is seeking to update the original labor provisions with stronger rules aimed at lifting the salaries of Mexican manufacturing workers, whom many U.S. officials blame for taking American factory jobs.”

But there is no mechanism to force balance of trade.

If Trump really wants to balance the trade deficit there is fairly simple solution. Create incentives for Americans to export capital and invest it in other countries. If there is a specific country like Mexico he things is selling to much stuff the US, target the incentives to be most attractive to invest in Mexico.
