Even as the controversy swirls about author / psychic actress Noreen Renier inappropriately referencing to Court TV an apparently unfounded book cover endorsement reading "the most credible psychic out there" for her upcoming release of 'The Practical Psychic' next month, we now have a second pile of smoldering crap laid before the public.

Apparently the same book or an alternative version is being released overseas --- where the Court TV trademark and former cable network remains relatively unknown --- so instead book readers (and potential buyers) are treated to a giant FBI seal with references to "criminal arrests" and "Investigator for the FBI." See http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.lalibrairie.com/cache/couvertures/9782361640408.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.lalibrairie.com/nouveautes/tous-les-livres/medium,1192076-0.html&usg=__QPNBbbw3u8UfwOcUgZm0mL4qchY=&h=281&w=185&sz=61&hl=en&start=115&zoom=1&tbnid=vM0ao1sT3fshhM:&tbnh=138&tbnw=89&ei=3yABTuDiGoLhiALFmpWrCA&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dnoreen%2Brenier%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DX%26biw%3D1148%26bih%3D711%26tbm%3Disch&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=334&vpy=235&dur=2562&hovh=224&hovw=148&tx=63&ty=106&page=5&ndsp=33&ved=1t:429,r:26,s:115&biw=1148&bih=711

Noreen Renier's paranormal investigative work as an FBI paid and accredited crime consultant is absolutely non-existent over the past 25 years. During that time frame it has existed only as a highly delusional and full-time bogus charade. And her claims of directly being hired and paid as a paranormal investigator by hundreds of law enforcement agencies were also shown as bogus in the last two years. See http://www.gpinquirygroup.com/gpinquirygroup/Police%20bookings%20that%20don't%20exist.html

That a federal judge --- under the U.S. Department of Justice --- in March 2011 found Noreen Renier as not credible and stated that she misled his federal court obviously comes at a time when Renier is spinning decades of paranormal delusions into further marketing bull crap. A comprehensive and updated profile with indexing to her charades is now posted at http://www.commentarybysherlock.com/commentarybysherlock/newindexforsherlockapril

All of this comes as the latest Skeptical Inquirer July/August issue has been released with an article written by Dr. Gary Posner, M.D. titled Psychic Detective Noreen Renier Lambasted in Judge’s Ruling. The March 2011 U.S. court ruling which cited Noreen Renier as not credible as a witness apparently didn’t go far enough. It might have added that she creates public charades even before you turn past her book covers.

And another:

"We wouldn't have found Norman Lewis without the help of Noreen."

Statement of Williston, FL Police Chief Olin Slaughter regarding Noreen Renier's assistance in locating missing person Norman Lewis. See http://www.lawofficer.com/article/magazine-feature/psychic-detectives

So what? A couple of cops were foolish enough to believe some lying con-woman has magical powers, or too embarrassed to admit they were idiots to get her involved in a case they had bungled for months. That nonsense was shown to be, well, nonsense in this thread. But if you have any evidence that actually supports your contention that Noreen Renier has magical powers, you know, aside from the arguments from incredulity and ignorance you already offered, that other thread might be a better place to take them.

Use of FBI seal a "clear violation" as are related claims

The use of the FBI seal on a commercially sold book cover by or on behalf of author Noreen Renier is a clear violation. The FBI seal is HIGHLY protected from unauthorized commercial use internationally and its unauthorized use is subject to prosecution under federal criminal law, including Sections 701 and 709 of Title 18 of the United States Code. I am aware that a complaint with documentation has been filed in Washington, D.C. today with Assistant Attorney General for Adminstration, Mr. Lee J. Lofthus.

Also the U.S. Bankruptcy Trustees are under the U.S. Department of Justice and two were directly involved in Ms. Renier's recent Chapter 7 filings and outcome. Again, U.S. Court Judge William Anderson declared on March 21, 2011 that Noreen Renier “misled” his court, and she is not a credible witness.

Thanks for the clarification by 'Joe the Juggler' on the the difference between branches. He's exactly correct.

One other note. I mentioned Gary Posner's article in the latest Skeptical Inquirer but failed to mention a somewhat extended version of the article appears in the latest Tampa Bay Skeptics Report (Volume 24, number 1, Summer 2011), the publication of the Tampa Bay Skeptics which was founded by Gary in 1988.

The web site is www.tampabayskeptics.org and the TBS is a special interest group of the Center For Inquiry Tampa Bay, a non-profit educational and scientific organization devoted to the critical examination of paranormal and fringe-science claims. Subscriptions to the report (4 issues per year) are $15 and additional donations are welcome. The reports have offered advanced foresight on the latest paranormal news for more almost 25 years.

I noted that the FBI maintains strong requirements in the use of its seal, including as an example that it is normally unacceptable for use on a commercial product such as a book cover. And criminal penalties for its misuse include both fines and jail time. However a friend questioned me today about a possible escape clause if the product is manufactured outside the United States.

As I am not an attorney I can only note the following:

1. The author and apparent copyright holder in this case of the book lives as a resident in North Carolina. And as such would normally be entitled to book royalites collected from sales of the book.

2. It is likely that an author and copyright holder would have been given sign-off on the cover artwork previous to the book being published.

3. Other FBI seal "misuse" products manufactured outside the U.S. but imported into the U.S. for sale have previously been deemed unauthorized products and received significant penalities.

4. I was able to find yesterday multiple U.S. book sellers willing to sell me the book and guarantee arrival to my home (in the U.S.) within 10 days, or in the case of 3 sellers an option to pick it up in any of their local U.S. stores if I prepaid. I ordered multiple copies of the book yesterday and at least 3 copies of the book have already been shipped, including interestingly at least one copy coming directly from a distributor in New Jersey. So the books --- even if printed elsewhere --- are already within the U.S. and being sold directly to U.S. residents.

5. A Google search finds the book now being sold in multiple countries across Europe and it's also according to sellers at numerous international airport book shops, including one listed at New York LaGuardia airport. And if one includes "U.S. territories" then you can also find current sellers of the book with copies already on hand in retail shops. Clearly this is not a controlled "limited distribution" product.

6. Given this activity it would seem that even the present version of the book (with its text in French) is a U.S. available consumer product showcasing an apparently unauthorized FBI seal. Combining the FBI seal together with the cover claim that Noreen Renier is a investigator for the FBI ("Enquetrice pour le FBI"), and also displaying an FBI investigator's badge creates --- at least in my mind --- a clear misrepresentation of the type the FBI policy attempts, correctly, to prohibit. For those who have not seen the cover simply Google 'Noreen Renier MEDIUM: Enquetrice pour le FBI'. I for one hope the FBI is actively examining the use / claims of Ms. Renier in connection to this book release. I believe there is a potential conclusion that misuse of the seal (and the book cover's related claims) has taken place and that it seems to fit under the policy which makes it a criminal offense to make unauthorized commercial or otherwise inappropriate use of the seal and name of the FBI.

Ms. Renier spent almost 2 years arguing in a U.S. District Court between 2006 and 2007 that her first amendment rights (made relating to her first authored book) effectively over-ruled any breach claimed from an earlier legal settlement. However the U.S. District Court denied her extensive legal claims and ordered a judgment against her in 2006 and followed up with another in 2007. It will be interesting to see if she defends her actions here also using her first amendment rights.

I for one will find it interesting to watch such a "investigator for the FBI" go head-to-head against authentic FBI investigators. But in fact this may have been part of a marketing / publicity plan all along --- particularly if the book is nearing its own English text release.
