I wish Cameron had actually explained in detail what these 'traditional Christian values' are. I want to know how not to slide into moral degeneracy!

Don't worry, I am sure there will be a 'Back To Basics' campaign along sometime soon with the Tory ministers being all for the family, parading their wives and obnoxious brats all over the press at every opportunity. Until they start dropping like flies due to being found having affairs with their secretaries or sharing double rooms in expensive hotels with young male advisers in order "To Save Money."

Actually, as much as a despise the idiot, listening to the whole speech is required, he does give a fairly balanced view (for tory scum.) Just there is nothing like a good soundbite to get people rabid.

Technically I suppose he is right.

The Head of State is also head of a church. And he probably thinks the only people he can annoy are Guardian readers who won't vote for him anyway.

So even if the CofE only had half a dozen practising members, the UK would still be a Christian country? I think not.

The UK is a country of non-believers; it's democracy that rules the roost in hearts and minds, not 17th century aristocratic hangovers.

Does anyone know what the statistics are in regards to religion and prison population in the UK? And is it like here in the US, where prisoners say they've found religion (any religion) in order to look good for the parole board?

According to these statistics (page 10) 67.5% of the prison population is religious. I thought it would be higher than that, remembering some stats for the USA prison population perhaps. Still, that's 35% more religion than the general UK population according to the statistics in post #10. David Cameron made out like it's a lack of religion which is causing crime, when, in fact, convicted criminals are much more likely to be religious.

There's quite a big presence by religions in prison, but I think that's probably largely because there's a high demand for preachers and Imam etc. Sadly it's the height of fashion in some peoples' minds to wear one of the free prison issue light-blue Rosary necklaces.

I'd be extremely surprised if any parole board would release somebody early because of religious conversion here...it's just not seen as a good thing...most people I meet just think religion is stupid and weak. Comedians on the TV relentlessly take the mik out of it. It's just not a religious country any more.

Not his deparment. Deciding what traditional Christian values actualy are is more a matter for Rowan Williams.

Assuming it still existed as an established church then constituionaly it would be. It would hardly be the first weird anomaly in what passes for our constitution.

David Cameron's right, regardless of the beliefs or lack of beliefs among the UK population. You have an official state religion (Church of England) whose head is also your head of State (that decrepit, presumably less slutty Paris Hilton called Queen Elizabeth the second), plus you live in a monarchy where the divine right to rule is given by God to the royal family by Fate through kinship or some other BS.

You can pretend to being a secular society once you get rid of the monarchy. Until then, the entire Commonwealth is composed of Christian nations (unless the monarch starts or adopts a new state religion that is not part of christianity; or gets rid of an official religion altogether, though that divine right to rule (even just as a figurehead) sort of ties at least theism with the whole Commonwealth).

1. The Monarch is not selected by divine right, but by law.
2. The Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is the head of the Church of England. The Queen of New Zealand is not. The Queen of Australia is not. The Queens of all of the Commonwealth Reams are not.

If it wasn't for the fact that we no longer have a credible navy I should think that Argentina would be getting a little nervous right now.

I suppose we shouldn't be surprised about Call Me continuing what Saint Tony began but the increasing "religification" of UK politics is, IMO, a major retrograde step. I want politicians who understand the mechanics of government not those who believe that there's a sky daddy who'll kiss everything better.
