UK - December 2019 General Election

The Sunday Telegraph reports that Johnson is planning a dramatic overhaul of Whitehall in a drive to demonstrate that his government "works for the people".

It says his chief aide, Dominic Cummings, will spearhead a programme of radical reform of the civil service, including a review of the processes for hiring and firing officials, to ensure the Prime Minister's agenda is delivered.

So, there goes the politically neutral civil service.

A terrifying thought. However, he might find the existing civil service 'less than accommodating' along the way.

John McDonnell blames Brexit and the media for Labour's defeat
Over on BBC One, the shadow chancellor, John McDonnell is speaking to Andrew Marr.

Marr says Corbyn went down very, very badly on the doorstep.

McDonnell tells Marr: “If anyone is to blame it is me, full stop.” He also says it was Brexit that did it but also that “the media did a job on Jeremy for four years”.

He says that when Corbyn had the opportunities on broadcast media he was seen as the most trustworthy leader.

Marr says his leadership poll ratings were “catastrophic”.

McDonnell says Boris Johnson is a “proven liar”, while Corbyn is know for his honesty and principles.

McDonnell tries to take a bullet for Corbyn, but only reveals how dishonest they are about the reason they lost. Note that he doesn't seem to realize how terrible Corbyn comes of when the electorate preferred a "proven liar" to his "honesty" and "principles". Presumably it's the electorate that's wrong.

2016 UK EU referendum by constituencies; 406 - Leave, 242 - Remain

2019 UK general election ; Conservative - 365, Labour/LD/SNP - 262

This isn't complicated, EU remainers got their "peoples' vote", they should STFU.

This always amuses me. Someone campaigns for years for something, gets what they want and then wants anyone else campaigning for something they want to shut up. The hypocrisy is amusing.

We live in a free(ish) democracy, people are not only allowed to campaign for what they want it is an actual right.

There is no reason why any one who wants to remain in the EU should have to stop campaigning for that regardless of any outcome of any vote.

What percentage of the voting electorate voted for hard Brexit supporting parties?

The terms 'hard brexit' and 'soft brexit' are remainer inventions. As one of the (apparently few) leave supporters in this thread - even though we are the majority in the public at large - I'll explain what the terms mean to me.

Hard Brexit = Brexit
Soft Brexit = Not Brexit = Remain Lite.

Shame that that wasn't how it was portrayed to the voters in the referendum eh?

Of course I can, and so did Boris who as the key figurehead of Vote Leave was eminently entitled to do so. Boris's subsequent election as Leader and re-election as Prime Minister shows that a majority of both the Tory party and the country agree with me.
Simple maths says you are clearly wrong on that point.

You choose to inhabit your remain-supporting echo chamber and fail to see how out of step you are with public opinion. Democracy keeps trying to teach you lessons, but there are none so blind as those that refuse to see.
No, you're just deluded as to what the facts actually are.

Can you imagine the press reaction if a Labour government had suggested such changes...?

Personally, I don’t find fascism amusing.

No, it isn't complicated, so your inability to understand it is rather telling.

Votes:

Conservative - 13,966,565
Labour/LD/SNP - 15,207,871

Conservative/Brexit Ltd./UKIP - 15,231,754
Labour/LD/SNP/Greens/PC - 16,224,837

The "peoples' [sic] vote" says Remain would win.

Interestingly, at the time of both the Thatcher and Blair "landslides" of '79 and '97, as I recall neither were never analysed in terms of the 'popular vote' by the corporate media - neither, in fact, were anywhere near "landslides" in terms of total votes.

It's quite noticeable (and amusing) that on both sides of the pond the liberal (elite) now whine constantly about their respective electoral systems, having lost (at this point) three crucial elections in the past 3-4 years.

This latest rout (the UK general election) despite the BBC,'s C4's and the other corporate media outlet's 'project fear', the "disaster of Brexit", any economic up-turn in the UK reported as being "despite Brexit". To you, I know, such reporting is "fair and unbiased".

As I posted earlier, if one ignores certain facts and figures, then the election result was a win for remainers.

It takes a certain kind of mentality to cling onto the idea that you're still winning when you've been repeatedly soundly thrashed. Remainers posting in this thread are similar to Monty Python and the Holy Grail's Black Knight in this regard.

You think I needed the "corporate media" to add those numbers up?

Please don't bring that racist and bigoted propaganda crap in here.

It's got nothing to do with racism, or even race. But I'm sure it's comforting to pretend otherwise.

The only people who think there is any connection between being "woke" and going "broke" are religious bigots with an agenda.

Or the people who pay attention and watch it happen time and time again.

From the Guardian

..... Downing Street is threatening the future of the BBC by insisting it is seriously considering decriminalising non-payment of the licence fee, while boycotting Radio 4’s Today programme over the broadcaster’s supposed anti-Tory bias.

No 10 pulled ministers from Saturday’s edition of the Today programme and sources said it intended to “withdraw engagement” from the show in future.

The row is seen as an ominous sign of Boris Johnson’s willingness to bypass independent scrutiny and follows criticism of the BBC’s election coverage from both left and right.

The BBC is a corrupt hive, the sooner it's dismantled the better.
