NARCAP Report
(http://www.narcap.org/reports/010/TR10_Case_18a.pdf)

Oh goodness. Haven't we seen this before? You can not pile these various cases on top of each other since you can not prove they are related in any way. I thought we are going over Rogue River. It seems that this a case of "rinse - lather - repeat" ad infinitum. I prefer to "rinse-lather-rinse" and then get out of the shower. Pick one that you would present to a panel of scientists as good evidence of alien visitation. This way everybody can focus.

I guess there wasn´t any debate if these cases were easily explained. So it means that you don´t have a mundane explanation. It doesn´t have to be more complicated as this.

Feel free to actually read the thread Tomi... You'll be much better informed than your present position of having to guess about stuff.

Cheers

I guess there wasn´t any debate if these cases were easily explained.

You got it wrong. None of the cases has been explained, one way or another. That's why they are still titled UFO observations.

So it means that you don´t have a mundane explanation. It doesn´t have to be more complicated as this.

That's correct, no mundane explanation has been conclusively proven in f ex the Rouge river case. And, no more exotic explanation has been proven either. Thus, a UFO.

There are UFOs and there are TUFOs (truly unidentified)
No, there is no such thing. You're just playing with semantics here like Rramjet does because you can't prove that these observations are alien.

You wish that unidentfied means a not good data. Unfortunately in your case it is not so. And this is upon a good UFO research.

Yes, you are correct in the first sentence. There is not enough good data to identify some observations. The remainder of this paragraph you need to explain cause I don't understand what you mean.

Bark dogs. Bark.

Woof!

It is irrelevant that 4 additional activities are planned to be established between july 1 1948 and june 30 1949? You're not at all interested in what became of those? Sticking your fingers in your ears and shouting "nanananana"?

We've been over this before but I want to remind you that according to sources we've already discussed (http://www.thefreelibrary.com/Lighter-than-air+reservists-a095954316), several reserve squadrons we're established in 1949. As a coincidence they are NAS Lakehurst+4, just as planned:

ZP-751, 752, 753: NAS Lakehurst, N.J.
ZP-651: NAS Akron, Ohio
ZP-871: NAS Oakland, Calif.
ZP-911: NAS Squantum, Mass
ZP-951, 952: St. Ana, Calif.

Any comments?

You obviously reference THIS statement:

“During WW II, lighter-than-air (LTA) craft were key components in the war against the German U-boat, flying critical convoy escort and antisubmarine warfare (ASW) patrol missions. After war's end, blimps continued to serve in ASW and other roles, and in 1949 eight new reserve LTA patrol squadrons (ZP) were established. ZP-651 was based at NAS Akron, Ohio; ZPs 751, 752 and 753 at NAS Lakehurst, N.J.; ZP-871 at NAS Oakland, Calif.; ZP-911 at NAS Squantum, Mass.; and ZPs 951 and 952 at MCAF Santa Ana, Calif. These reserve ZP squadrons were even more unusual than their lighter-than-air brethren, as revealed by a closer look at ZP-911. (http://www.thefreelibrary.com/Lighter-than-air+reservists-a095954316)

The first thing to note is that the ONLY two bases here that are relevant (ie; West Coast) is NAS Oakland and MCAF Santa Ana.

Now the question must be asked... Did they have any blimps?

There is a small clue in the statement “These reserve ZP squadrons were even more unusual than their lighter-than-air brethren…”.

This seems to indicate that somehow these Reservists were NOT LTA equipped, so what does this mean exactly? The sentence finishes “…as revealed by a closer look at ZP-911.” and the next paragraph begins:

“Part of the Air Wing (RAW) 91, VP-911’s location at Squantum posed one major challenge to the squadron: the station had no blimp hanger, so no blimps could be permanently kept there.”

“VP-911’s”? Surely a misprint? Nevertheless… no blimps. And the implication of the last sentence of the first paragraph is that this is a typical situation – that is Squantum is used as an exemplar for all Reserve squadrons. No blimps. So where did these Units get their actual FLIGHT training – if their bases had no blimps??

There is another small clue in a statement further down the page “The reserve air wing was basically an administrative concept rather than an operational one…”.

Ah… so not operational! That explains it. Simply they did NOT get actual FLIGHT training - because they had no blimps to conduct training in - and that is why their “non-operational” status… but surely somewhere there must have been FLIGHT training - otherwise why call them "ZP" Reservists in the first place?

The following sections from an earlier article (the above was a 2002 article in the Naval Aviation News) reveals all:

“The Naval Air Reserve Training Unit at NAS Lakehurst has a unique place in the Reserve Line-up. Not only is it the only unit which provides lighter-than-air training for Organized Reservists but it is the first LTA Reserve unit ever to be set up either in this country or abroad.”

(…)

In addition, Volunter Air Reservists (LTA) from all over the country, who are interested enough in the program to pay their own travel costs or hitchhike via government air, come to NARTU Lakehurst for their two weeks annual training. During the past two years between 300 and 400 Volunteers have taken these cruises.”

(…)

Two airships of the K-type have been assigned for use by Reserves. Training flights frequently last for some 12 hours.

(…)

Present aim in training is to prepare Organized Reservists for future airship operations aboard carriers.
(…)

NARTU Lakehurst helps support one of the liveliest associated volunteer units in the country – AVUA (LTA) – Squantum, Massachusetts. The pioneer unit started out as a volunteer Aviation Unit under the commandant with no flying privileges, but so great was the enthusiasm of its members and so many LTA personnel were interested that a mast was erected at NAS Squantum so that a Reserve airship could be moored there for flight training.

(…)

…the Reserve LTA training program at Lakehurst is now rolling along in high gear – so smoothly, in fact, that plans for next year call for an increase of O. R. billets.”
(Naval Aviation news – August 1949. p.19 - http://www.history.navy.mil/nan/backissues/1940s/1949/aug49.pdf)

Sooo… Reservists “came from all over the country” to get their FLIGHT training at Lakehurst! And it has already been noted that Lakehurst was the ONLY operational blimp station.

All this indicates quite strongly that there WERE NO BLIMPS ON THE WEST COAST IN 1949!

Then there is THIS little statement:

The state of Oregon is in the Naval Air Reserve line-up and proud to be aboard, thank you! NAF Salem, which is supported by NARTU Seattle … It is Oregon’s first naval Air Reserve activity, and as such, will be local headquarters for more than 900 officers and men living in the Willamette Valley area. Commissioning day was a big event in Oregon’s capital city. (Naval Aviation news – December 1949. p.25 - http://www.history.navy.mil/nan/backissues/1940s/1949/dec49.pdf)

But wait… Salem is “Oregon’s FIRST naval Air reserve ACTIVITY…”? This means that the “others” (as indicated in the original paragraph) were not active? This certainly accords with the (2002) statement that “The reserve air wing was basically an administrative concept rather than an operational one…”.

Now whoever wrote the 2002 article (for it also comes from the Naval Aviation News) seems not to have gone over the back issues of the time to find out exactly WHAT WAS actually occurring at the time in terms of OPERATIONAL status. Simply, as ALL previous documents so far presented indicate – there were NO blimps on the WEST COAST in 1949 – indeed the records show were ONLY TWO operational blimps in the whole of the USA at the time – at Lakehurst N.J.!

No blimps on the West Coast in 1949.

1. See drawings
2. See drawings
3. Distant object
4. Ehh...wut?
5. Not confirmed, contradictory witness statements, etc.
(Points 1 & 2)
What is this obsession with trying to misrepresent the drawings? Anyone who has followed the case will realise that the drawings represent a circular craft. The witnesses who drew the craft described in their interview testimony a circular (like a coin or pancake) shaped craft. So how is it that the UFO debunkers in this forum can suppose that the witnesses then drew a “cigar-shaped” craft? It simply does not make any sense.

Of course the UFO debunkers MUST misrepresent the drawings, because “blimp” is the ONLY “explanation” they can come up with - even though such an “explanation” does NOT fit with EITHER the eyewitness descriptions, OR the historical evidence!

(Point 3)
The engines on blimps (especially those of the era) are (and were) particularly noisy beasts. As far as can be ascertained, there was no wind on the day (the witnesses were able to search the river surface for “feeding fish” – indicating that the river surface was not “ruffled” by any wind: It was a “clear” blue-sky day). The strength of wind needed to “blow” sound away is quite substantial. For example:

“The sound speed, at moderate velocities of wind, is almost constant throughout the flow field. That is, velocities of wind such as 10 m/s does not produce a substantial variation of the speed of sound compared with that in still air. What makes the desired sound more difficult to be heard is the interference with the rest of pressure waves in your ears produced by wind fluctuations as you said in a windy day. Another point is that the sound wave can be carried faster if the wind is faster, because the sound wave is advected by the fluid. But such difference is negligible at ordinary wind velocities because 345m/s>>10m/s. The thing is pretty different at Mach Numbers of order 1 though... (http://www.physicsforums.com/archive/index.php/t-149392.html)

(see also the discussion here for example (http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=273093)

The bottom line is that because sound moves at 343 m/s any “wind” is going to have a negligible affect on the sound reaching you from a distant object (remember also the object is radiating sound in all directions). If the sound is “shifted” at all by the wind moving the whole airmass – remembering also that “This downwind refraction effect occurs because there is a wind gradient; the sound is not being carried along by the wind.” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speed_of_sound), then you simply pick up the sound that is radiated “not-directly” at you from source.

So basically, the wind would have to be above Mach 1 (which after all is the speed of sound) before any substantial “wind” effects become apparent.

(Point 4)
The object “manoeuvred”. That is, when first sighted it was heading toward the observers, but it turned through an angle of greater than 90 degrees to eventually head diagonally away from the observers and disappear into the distance (I’d like to see a blimp do THAT without exposing its “flank” to any observer!).

(Point 5)
Mr B, Mr C AND Mrs D claimed it was moving at, or faster than, a jet plane. Mr D claimed it was moving at a “high rate of speed”. Only Mrs A – who acknowledged she had no experience in estimation ( “The interviewee stated that she was not familiar with aircraft; therefore, she could not estimate with any accuracy the speed or altitude at which the object was travelling.” stated anything different (speed of a C-47). So your contention here is a misrepresentation (again!) of the evidence.

A question needs to be asked. What gives the UFO debunkers the licence to feel free to misrepresent the evidence (as above)? I thought they were “sceptics” and adhered to “scientific methodology” - at least they CLAIM they are – and do… Quite clearly – on the evidence - their claims in this direction are wholly bankrupt.

Just because you can't think of a mundane explanation doesn't mean there isn't one. This is your major mistake.
Oh but this is NOT the case at all. It is not ME (alone) who cannot “think” of a mundane explanation. The cases I am presenting have been thoroughly researched by many, many people –including UFO debunkers - in some cases over many decades – and STILL no mundane answers are forthcoming (at least none that are plausible AND fit the evidence)!

Same mistake again. Something that when observed seems to defy physics doesn't necessarily have to do that. We can be mistaken.
In many of the cases I have been presenting there is no “seems” about it! For example in the Tehran case we had a UFO that (while in flight at speed) first split apart then rejoined and then split apart again and landed part of itself – while the rest kept flying and “harassing” the F-4. The UFO also “jumped locations” (being in one place, then disappearing only to reappear at a more distant location). If that is not “defying” the laws of physics as we know them I don’t know what is!

Up close yes. Not on a distant blimp, on a heat hazy day, watching through binoculars from a rocky boat.
We don’t have an accurate distance for the blimp, but the eyewitness consensus is that it was about 1 mile away. HEAT HAZE IS A GROUND EFFECT and does NOT appear over water! The use of binoculars enabled a “resolution” of details about the object that could not be seen with the un-aided eye. The water was still, calm and flat – (it was a wide, flat, tidal section of the river and they were looking for “feeding” fish on the surface and to do this the surface MUST be relatively calm)

Your continual efforts to misrepresent the evidence are telling. If the ONLY way you can get a mundane explanation up is to misrepresent the evidence, then that says a great deal about the plausibility of your “explanation”. Simply, the evidence does NOT support your “blimp” explanation!

Your opinion is not shared by the majority of posters here. Your belifsystem just filters out any data that doesn't confirm it. Maybe start posting in the religious forum instead?
I have shown (many times including above) where YOU do this (allow your belief system to “filter out data any data that does not confirm it). You have NOT shown if I have done this. Perhaps you should look to your own advice. Again we have the “old” UFO debunker trick of accusing (without foundation or supplying evidence) your opponent of the very sins you (yourself) commit.

Only you, in the whole wide world, doesn't understand what is meant by that. Don't be silly, you know what we mean.
IF YOU understand what “extraordinary evidence” IS – then YOU will be able to provide an explanation and examples. My challenge to YOU is therefore to ‘explain (with examples) what “extraordinary evidence” actually IS.

Of course you cannot DO this because the concept is a TOTAL nonsense. Evidence is evidence – you either have it or you do not.

And this is where you once again state your opinion as fact. "Plausible" is based on your own imagination and previous experience. You are still saying that "Since I personally can't think of a mundane solution it must be alien".
Are you contending that any mundane “explanation” does NOT have to be a plausible explanation?

Moreover, you completely ignore my explanations of “alien”. But I have explained this point MANY times now. A UFO is “alien” by definition because there ARE NO mundane solutions. (I have addressed the “personally can’t think of a mundane explanation” above)

UFO means exactly Unidentified. We don't know. Could be mundane, could be exotic.
No, UFOs are UFOs BECAUSE mundane solutions have been ruled out! Of course you simply confirm what I have always contended that UFO debunkers do NOT “believe” in UFOs at all, instead they believe in UFMOs (Unidentified Flying Mundane Objects).

IF there are NO mundane explanations, then by definition UFOs are “exotic”.

But you don't provide any positive evidence for your claim of "aliens". You just try to provide evidence that it can't be anything mundane that you personally can think of.
Oh? Then perhaps you would care to explain the “beings” in the Father Gill case, the Lonnie Zamora case and the Travis Walton case? Here IS “positive” evidence (If the “craft” in these cases ARE “UFOs” (and thus “alien”), then by definition any beings associated with them WILL be “aliens”).

You also keep stating “your personally can think of” (or words to that effect) but I have already explained this to you above. Perhaps you believe that by stating unfounded assertions many times over, they somehow become true via mere repetition?

No, they are unidentified things. You don't know if it's alien or mundane, neither do I. Stop redefining things to suit your argumentation.
But they are not merely unidentified “things”. They have NO mundane explanation and are thus, by definition “alien”. It is actually YOU who wants to “redefine” “UFO” to mean “UFMO”! Again you accuse ME (without evidence) of the very sin you (yourself) commit. Huh.

That's a bit dishonest Rramjet. They had no blimps at Squantum because they had no blimp hangar at Squantum.

The next part of the article (that you neglected to quote) goes on to say:

"Nearby Naval Air Reserve Training Unit (NARTU NARTU Naval Air Reserve Training Unit ) South Weymouth, Mass., had been built in 1942 specifically as an airship base and had hosted ZP-11 and Airship Utility Squadron 1 during WW II, but it was put into caretaker status at the end of the war. In order to operate blimps from the hangar-less base, ZP-911 borrowed K-type airships from three sister squadrons on board NAS Lakehurst. Transport Squadrons 911 or 912 flew ZP-911 crews to Lakehurst, and the crews ferried the airships back to Squantum for the reservists' weekend flying duties."
So K class blimps were regularly borrowed from a near by base and used for the Navy Reservists weekend flying duties.

This completely contradicts the whole of your previous post that:
1. The Reservists had no blimps
2. The Reservists did not have flying duties

Both shown to be incorrect assertions from the (cherry picked) information you yourself provided. Did you think no one would check your source?

However, as this article is not talking about West Coast operations, it in its self isn't confirmation of blimps being flown by the Navy Reserves on the West Coast, but it does highlight the capabilities of the Navy Reserves and clearly states they had blimps and they had flying duties.

"Most of the reservists' weekend flying was dedicated to maintaining basic flying skills, but ZP-911 crews occasionally got to practice their ASW mission against submarines from New London, Conn. Paul LeBlanc, a WW II Pacific veteran who served with ZP-911 from 1949 until 1953, recalls that they considered it a good day's hunting if they got hits from 6 or 7 sonobuoys out of 10 dropped."

We also know that blimps were budgeted for (assigned to NAS Oakland California - ZP-871) in the 1948 report document.

[...rest of post snipped...]

there were NO blimps on the WEST COAST in 1949 – indeed the records show were ONLY TWO operational blimps in the whole of the USA at the time – at Lakehurst N.J.!

Incorrect, inaccurate and dishonest.

Highly visible on a highly visible blimp Rramjet.
Yes, indeed, precisely my point. Thank you!

However the witnesses were not looking at a highly visible blimp, they were looking at a reflective object that was at least a mile away at an altitude of a mile high with the sun to their backs…
Yes, right so far…

…from a rocking fishing boat that was in the tidal section of a river estuary, two of the witnesses using binoculars of questionable quality.
But now you descend into unfounded assertion. The actual evidence points toward the fact that the boat was NOT “rocking” (remember they were looking for feeding fish on the surface of the water and you cannot do that if the surface is “upset” enough to case sufficient rocking of a about to make perception difficult).

The binoculars are only “of questionable” quality in the UFO debunkers world. It is interesting to ask what they were doing with binoculars in the first place. It MUST have been because they wanted to “observe” things in the landscape around them. The immediate thing that springs to mind is spotting “feeding fish” – and to DO that, one does NOT take binoculars of “questionable quality”. Maybe they wanted to spot “birds” in the trees – but again, one does not take binoculars of “questionable quality” to do that. Whatever you choose as the reason for those binoculars, the mere fact that they were there for SOME particular purpose meant that they were in working order. That the “object” they sighted “resolved” in apparent detail when the binoculars were used, simply shows that they we good enough for the purpose. It really is that simple.

Has it? I must have missed that bit, the last I saw was where the financial plans of the Navy and Navy Reserves showed that blimp operations would be continuing small scale on the West Coast and verifiable documents were provided to back up the assertion.
The UFO debunkers complain about the thread ‘going around in circles” yet here one of them claims to have “missed” the previous discussions? You cannot have it both ways Stray Cat.

The “financial plans” show that THERE WERE NO BLIMPS ON THE WEST COAST. Full stop. Your complete and utter ignorance of the evidence here is startling. The documents are on the public record. Have you not bothered to look at them? Or is it simply another case of wanton, deliberate misrepresentation?

So… no matter HOW you take these documents - as “planned” (erroneous) or extant (correct) assigned aircraft, they STILL do not show what you claim them to show. There is NO “scale” of “blimp” activity on the West Coast in 1949 - because there are NO blimps.

You stated:
Hi Tomi71 - Welcome to the forum.

Are you next going to demonstrate a lack of understanding about Extraordinary claims requiring extraordinary evidence too?
Since you were asking if others could “understand” the concept of “extraordinary evidence” (while also implying that I could not) then I asked if YOU could define “extraordinary evidence”.
What again?

So you can pretend you don't understand the concept again for few more time wasting posts and then in another 35 pages ask again in order to keep your train crash thread going a bit longer?
Naaaaa... just look up the explanations people gave you last time, they haven't changed since then.
Obviously your refusal to do so (or even point to a place in the thread where you HAVE done so) means that you either cannot of have not.

There is NO such thing as “extraordinary evidence”. Evidence is evidence – you either have it, or you do not.

So where did these Units get their actual FLIGHT training – if their bases had no blimps??

There is another small clue in a statement further down the page “The reserve air wing was basically an administrative concept rather than an operational one…”.

You don't have to look for "clues". You only have to read where they got it from (it's in the article):

ZP-911 borrowed K-type airships from three sister squadrons on board NAS Lakehurst. Transport Squadrons 911 or 912 flew ZP-911 crews to Lakehurst, and the crews ferried the airships back to Squantum for the reservists' weekend flying duties.

You're wrong, they ferried the blimps into their base for training. Read the article, there is no need to guess here.

Sooo… Reservists “came from all over the country” to get their FLIGHT training at Lakehurst! And it has already been noted that Lakehurst was the ONLY operational blimp station.

Students come from all over the world to my university. That doesn't mean it's the only university in the world. Also, Lakehurst was NOT the only operational station. Yoy have to reread the articles me thinks.

Hint: NAS St. Ana and NAS Oakland were not in Oregon, but really close.

No blimps on the West Coast in 1949.

Orly?

(Points 1 & 2)
What is this obsession with trying to misrepresent the drawings? Anyone who has followed the case will realise that the drawings represent a circular craft.

Yeah, and the outline is very blimplike so it could be witnesses interpretation of what they saw that is wrong. We have been over this already.

(Point 3)
So basically, the wind would have to be above Mach 1 (which after all is the speed of sound) before any substantial “wind” effects become apparent.

Nice strawman. So sound volume doesn't change with distance? That's an interesting observation that I'm quite sure would win you a nobel prize if you can prove it.

(Point 4)
The object “manoeuvred”. That is, when first sighted it was heading toward the observers, but it turned through an angle of greater than 90 degrees to eventually head diagonally away from the observers and disappear into the distance (I’d like to see a blimp do THAT without exposing its “flank” to any observer!).

But it was exposing it's flank to the observers. Look at the drawings.

So the other ones were experts at estimating speed? Sorry, didn't know that.

We have a plausible explanation now that we are discussing. Also, would you like to point me to the thorough research you are talking about. As far as I know, you have some witnesses who saw something the couldn't identify. I read that on a webpage. If you got more, then by all means, present it.

It seemed to split apart, it seemed to rejoin, it seemed to land part of itself just like oil well fires seemed to chase planes in another case.

We don’t have an accurate distance for the blimp, but the eyewitness consensus is that it was about 1 mile away. HEAT HAZE IS A GROUND EFFECT and does NOT appear over water!

Oh, I didn't know that the blimp was hovering above the river with no land in between itself and the observers. Where did you get that information?

The use of binoculars enabled a “resolution” of details about the object that could not be seen with the un-aided eye.

With the binoculars, the object resolved into a pancake-like shape, somewhat thicker in the center than the edges, perfectly flat on the bottom with a small fin or vane arising about midship and growing gradually higher to the rear, ending flush with a trailing edge as the object travelled. Flat surface was parallel to the earth. The object appeared to be made of aluminum or some other shiny metal, and while it appeared to be oval, it could have been perfectly round in plan section. There appeared to be no opening or protuberance of any sort other than the fin already described.

As is obvious from this, binoculars didn't resolve any other detail than a fin. Other than that, it was only the overall shape. Notice also the bolded part. It appeared to be oval.

The water was still, calm and flat – (it was a wide, flat, tidal section of the river and they were looking for “feeding” fish on the surface and to do this the surface MUST be relatively calm)

Guessing again huh? You don't know if the water was calm, you don't know how much the boat was rocking due to people moving about in it. Your claim that surface must be relatively calm when looking for feeding fish sure comes as a surprise to me and my fly fishing friends since 25 years or so.

Are you contending that any mundane “explanation” does NOT have to be a plausible explanation?

Plausible is a subjective concept, not an objective one.

No, UFOs are UFOs BECAUSE mundane solutions have been ruled out!

No. UFO holds the possibility of being identified as something mundane or something exotic. Stop redefining words.

Tell me Jocce and/or Stray Cat -

How do you interpret the tables contained here:

FISCAL YEAR 1949 (10 May 1947)
(pp. 20-21)

FISCAL YEAR 1949 (28 June 1948)
(p.26)

FISCAL YEAR 1950 (01 May 1949)
(p.25)

Is it not the case that these tables indicate that there are NO blimps stationed on the WEST COAST in 1949?

Where are the airships listed at NAS Santa Ana or NAS Oakland? Is it not the case that NONE are listed in the 1948 and 1949 forward estimates?

Let us track the airships through the years:

MAY 1947
“Lakehurst, N.J. (LTA)” - 2 airships
“Santa Ana (LTA)” – 2 airships
“Cleveland – Akron” – 2 airships
TOTAL = 6 airships (but perhaps Cleveland had non-operational airships – it is not listed as an LTA)

JUNE 1948
“NAS Lakehurst” – 6 airships
TOTAL = 6 airships
(…now I wonder where THEY could have come from?)

MAY 1949
“NARTU Lakehurst, N.J.” – 2 airships
(…we seem to have some “lost” – or decommissioned - airships here… but WHERE could they have gone, these “lost” or decommissioned airships?
Oh yes, here they are! On page 20…

E. STORAGE FACILITIES
“NAF Weeksville, N.C.” … “1 ZP”.

Well fancy that, we have not “lost” them after all!

..BUT – I hear you say – BUT this is the forward estimate for the 1949/1950 financial year, what happened in the previous year?

Oh…we find out that airships were being STORED at NAS Santa Ana as well as as at NAF Weeksville. But of course storage is NOT operational!

BUT – I hear you say again – you mentioned above there was a subsection (2) to SECTION IV (that is: “(2) Navy (LTA)”) – WHAT is listed under this section in THIS document?

Why, lonely old “Lakehurst, N.J.” of course (but then it had “2 ZP” as well as 1 ZP”) oh well, it obviously got downgraded in the following year…

BUT – I hear you say yet again – above that, on page 17 – there is “NAS Moffett, Cal.” listed with 1 ZP as operational!

But of course such a claim would be entirely too hasty.

“In January 1944, the last airship arrived at Moffett for assembly. Two months later, Moffett graduated its last training class for pilots and crew. And in August 1947, a blimp went down off the Cape of Mendocino. No lives were lost, but it would be the last flight for the LTA program at Moffett.

That same month, the last blimp at Moffett Field was deflated.
http://www.moffettfieldmuseum.org/history.html

Ah…so NOW I realise – I hear you say - WHY you originally called the above documents a Navy wish list – because they DO NOT reflect what actually occurred at the bases in question! The ONLY section that is at ALL relevant is the “existing bases and the lists of aircraft held at those bases as of the date of publication of the documents. Everything ELSE in those documents IS a “wish list”!

So…I repeat:

1. HOW do YOU (Jocce and Stray Cat) interpret the tables indicating the aircraft held at the various base sin the above documents?

To me, ALL the evidence that I read indicates – every trail you follow – leads to the SAME conclusion - you guessed it – NO BLIMPS ON THE WEST COAST IN 1949! (perhaps I should qualify that – seeing as there WERE Goodyear blimps – NO NAVY blimps on the West Coast in 1949)

(Moreover, you completely ignore my explanations of “alien”. But I have explained this point MANY times now. A UFO is “alien” by definition because there ARE NO mundane solutions. (I have addressed the “personally can’t think of a mundane explanation” above)
This is an interesting claim, Rramjet. As valuable as your opinion is here, I'd still appreciate some confirming evidence that this is the case. Do you have any sources (not UFO creduloid ones, please) that state that UFOs by definition are alien?
No, UFOs are UFOs BECAUSE mundane solutions have been ruled out! Of course you simply confirm what I have always contended that UFO debunkers do NOT “believe” in UFOs at all, instead they believe in UFMOs (Unidentified Flying Mundane Objects).
This is another interesting claim, Rramjet, that I would like to see some confirming evidence for. The only definition I've seen for UFO includes the word "Unidentified" and omits any mention of mundane solutions being ruled out. How did you arrive at your unique definition?
IF there are NO mundane explanations, then by definition UFOs are “exotic”.
This is another interesting observation, Rramjet. It's been proven that you are unable to rule out all mundane explanations so by your definition, NO UFOs are "exotic". Does this state your position correctly?

Are you contending that any mundane “explanation” does NOT have to be a plausible explanation?
I know I've said this before Rramjet, but really, go look up plausible, and implausible in a dictionary. They are not synonyms for possible and impossible.

An explanation can be both plausible and impossible. It can also be implausible and possible.

Take quantum mechanics. It is one of the most implausible theories ever invented. Take quantum tunnelling - it's basically the equivalent of pushing a toy car towards a 100 foot high hill at 2 mph, and having it suddenly disappear, and then reappear on the far side of the hill. It's ridiculous. It's totally implausible. And yet, if it didn't work we wouldn't be having this conversation, because the internet is completely reliant on the fact that it works. It's implausible, but it isn't just possible, it's proven to work.

How about magnets? Look at a magnet stuck to a fridge door. It just sits there, year after year, defying gravity. It must be expending energy, doing work to resist gravity, but it never loses its magnetism. So it must be getting its energy from somewhere else.

Perfectly plausible explanation, except that it's complete bollocks. The magnet does lose energy, but the amount of magnetic energy stored in a permanent ferromagnet is orders of magnitude larger than the amount of energy required to keep it stuck to the fridge door, so the energy loss is very slow. It takes decades before it loses enough energy that it won't stick to the fridge any more. Completely plausible, and utterly impossible.

So your complaint that the explanation offered is implausible is, in fact, worthless. You need to show that it's impossible. And your requirement that an explanation be plausible is rubbish, it just needs to be possible.

I know that you guys covered this ad nauseum, and I'm not asking Rramjet directly, but...am I getting this right?

What is this obsession with trying to misrepresent the drawings? Anyone who has followed the case will realise that the drawings represent a circular craft. The witnesses who drew the craft described in their interview testimony a circular (like a coin or pancake) shaped craft. So how is it that the UFO debunkers in this forum can suppose that the witnesses then drew a “cigar-shaped” craft? It simply does not make any sense.
The original link [ http://www.brumac.8k.com/Rogue/RogueRiver.html ] is long dead, so I just looked at the photos in this thread. I found the thumbnail here - [http://www.ufoevidence.org/cases/pictures/thumbs/May1949.jpg ] and it looks like a blimp. Stray Cat addressed it here.

Blimp-Comparison.jpg

If they saw a 'circular craft' why didn't they draw one? Is Rramjet's incredulity such that he simply cannot see what others see? It sounds like the JFK or bigfoot people that "see" things in grainy photos which aren't obvious to anyone else.

If UFOs from outer space are bothering to visit us, why can't the billion-plus camera phones out there record one in decent resolution? Why in the world are we looking at hand drawings from a mile away from 1949?

Rramjet, in the first post in this thread you restated your claim:

I stated that I would present the evidence, not only for UFOs, but also for “aliens”.

It is quite clear to everyone that the strategy you are using is to try to rule out all mundane explanations. But, no matter how long we discuss f ex Rouge river, there will always be a greater than zero chance that it was a blimp. Your strategy is failing badly.

My suggestion to you is therefor that you pick a case carefully and make sure that there is multiple, objective and correlating evidence for "aliens" rather than try to disprove the more mundane explanations. Maybe that will be a more efficient strategy for you.

You really have to read posts more carefully. I explained my position already:
http://www.internationalskeptics.com/forums/showpost.php?p=5703194&postcount=6847

Two comments.

One: Just because Reserve squadrons are set up, does NOT mean they have access to operational airships – for example NAS Squantum (as will be demonstrated below).

Two: I begin to understand a serious problem among UFO debunkers. If they cannot research and understand the clear, unambiguous, well documented history that shows no USN/USNR airships on the West Coast in 1949 (as follows below), what hope have they of ever understanding less well documented UFO cases?

Please read the following information carefully - noting the dates as you go.

“The reduction in LTA following the war left ZP-12 at NAS Lakehurst and ZP-31 at NAS Santa Ana as the only active squadrons. A detachment of ZP-31 continued at NAS Moffett Field. On November 15, 1946, ZP-12 was redesignated ZP-2 and ZP-31 became ZP- 1. In the summer of 1947, ZP-1 made a home port and fleet change from NAS Santa Ana in the Pacific Fleet to NAS Weeksville in the Atlantic. The change was due to the reduction of NAS Santa Ana to a maintenance status and the elimination of the ZP overhaul mission at NAS Moffett Field. Mission requirements for the two ZP squadrons in the post-WW II 1940s were similar to their duties in WW II.

(…)

On January 20, 1949, Fleet Airship Wing One was established at NAS Lakehurst, and the two operational airship squadrons reported directly to the airship wing.

(…)

Airship Squadrons 1 and 2, the only two operational squadrons, were very active during the latter part of the 1940s. They kept LTA alive by meeting all operational commitments and demonstrating the airship’s capabilities. The need for more airship squadrons was seen and two more units were established, ZP-3 on September 28, 1950, followed by ZP-4 in May 1951. These four squadrons were the primary operating units of the LTA fleet in the 1950s.”

That same month, the last blimp at Moffett Field was deflated.” (http://www.moffettfieldmuseum.org/history.html)

“Blimp operations ended forever at Moffett in August 1947.”

“The squadron was relocated to MCAS El Toro in 1948” (…) “Santa Ana NAS was decommissioned by the Navy in 1949” [June 6 - see below Rr] (…) “For less than 2 years, the huge former Navy blimp airfield was evidently reused as a civilian airport.” (…) “The civilian use of the airfield ended in 1951, when the property was transferred to the Marine Corps, which renamed it as the Marine Corps Air Facility Santa Ana. According to The California State Military Museum, the station reopened during the Korean War. Blimp operations staged a brief resurrection when the Navy established a 2-blimp Naval Air Reserve Training Unit (NARTU) on April 1, 1951. The Marines arrived the next month establishing a helicopter air facility.” (http://www.airfields-freeman.com/CA/Airfields_CA_OrangeCo_SE.htm)

“Following the war, all blimp squadrons decommissioned except two which included Santa Ana's ZP 31 renamed ZP-1. Santa Ana also became an aircraft storage facility in November 1945. Finally in August 1947, the Navy relocated ZP-1 to Weeksville, N. C. and all blimp operations on the West Coast ended. On June 6, 1949, Santa Ana decommissioned becoming an OLF. For a time, the hangars were used by advertising blimps.” (http://www.militarymuseum.org/MCASTustin.html)

The following documents even tell us where the USN/USNR airships were located during the May 1947- May 1949 period:

FISCAL YEAR 1949 (published 10 May 1947)
MAY 1947
“Lakehurst, N.J. (LTA)” - 2 airships
“Santa Ana (LTA)” – 2 airships
“Cleveland – Akron” – 2 airships
(pp. 20-21)

FISCAL YEAR 1949 (published 28 June 1948)
JUNE 1948
“NAS Lakehurst” – 6 airships
(p.26)

FISCAL YEAR 1950 (published 01 May 1949)
MAY 1949
“NARTU Lakehurst, N.J.” – 2 airships
(p.25)

Some additional information can be found from sources such as the Naval Aviation News. For example:

R. billets.”
(Naval Aviation news – August 1949. pp.27-29 - http://www.history.navy.mil/nan/backissues/1940s/1949/aug49.pdf)

The evidence that there were NO operational USN/USNR airships on the West Coast in 1949 is thus clear and unambiguous.

Any comments?

This is an interesting claim, Rramjet. As valuable as your opinion is here, I'd still appreciate some confirming evidence that this is the case. Do you have any sources (not UFO creduloid ones, please) that state that UFOs by definition are alien?
Mundane:
Antonym: exotic
(http://encarta.msn.com/thesaurus_561581100/mundane.html)

Synonyms: alien, exotic
(http://thesaurus.com/browse/exotic)

Mundane:
Antonyms: foreign,
(http://thesaurus.com/browse/more+mundane)

Foreign
Synonym: alien
(http://thesaurus.com/browse/foreign)

Thus we can state by definition, if NOT “mundane”, then “alien”.

This is another interesting claim, Rramjet, that I would like to see some confirming evidence for. The only definition I've seen for UFO includes the word "Unidentified" and omits any mention of mundane solutions being ruled out. How did you arrive at your unique definition?
Then we take the logic (as explained above) one step further:

IF A “UFO” can be determined to have NO mundane explanation – then IT IS by definition “alien” (by applying the principle if NOT “mundane”, then “alien”).

This is another interesting observation, Rramjet. It's been proven that you are unable to rule out all mundane explanations so by your definition, NO UFOs are "exotic". Does this state your position correctly?
But here you rely on an unfounded assertion. The cases I have been presenting do NOT have mundane explanations. For example White Sands, Father Gill, Lonnie Zamora, Tehran, Val Johnson, Yukon, O’Hare…

IF you were able to propose plausible mundane explanations for these cases, then by definition they would not be “exotic” (or “alien”), however, as no plausible mundane explanations are forthcoming, I maintain these cases are “alien” under the principle if NOT “mundane”, then “alien”.

THEN, if “beings” are noted in conjunction with these UFOs (eg; Father Gill, Lonnie Zamora, etc) then these beings are ALSO “alien”.

Thus I can maintain that I HAVE presented evidence for “aliens”, just as I stated I would in my OP.
