UFO questions

(highlighted)
Yup, that tickled my fancy too. As soon as I saw '8 times larger' I thought how on earth would you gauge that?
We could debate the liklihood of UFO's all day, one side espousing The Drake Equation, the other, Fermi's Paradox and we'd get nowhere, fast. Pointless exercise in futility and all that.

I am two thirds of the way through this book at the moment:
[qimg]http://www.internationalskeptics.com/forums/imagehosting/thum_58851d1b7c65f88a.jpg[/qimg]
and It's staggeringly detailed and enlightening. To be fair and for the reasons stated above, I'm not really all that interested in debating with UFOlogists per se, but can and will endorse this book.

Did they *really* put in that apostrophe ("UFO's")? :jaw-dropp

The illusion that an aircraft is stopped in the sky is pretty easy to duplicate. Looking dead on as an airplane approaches for landing makes it look like it's just hanging there. It's so far away that it's not getting bigger but there's no aspect change, so it doesn't appear to be moving at all.

Much more information is needed but, really, you saw a plane.

Sure you can! Just need a stationary point, like a tree or tower for reference, then compare observed speed to expected speed to get an estimate of altitude, then you can use that data to determine it's actual size to apparent size. Of course, this requires a little bit of trigonometry and an estimate of speed better than, "a thousand miles an hour!!!!!", which may both be beyond the average UFO fanatics capabilities...

But what is the "expected speed" of an unknown craft? (If the craft was not "unknown", thus, "unidentified", to the observer, it wouldn't be a UFO, now would it?)

Hence the term "constant heading constant danger" when dealing with other traffic in a flight context. If a dot in your windscreen doesn't move (and it's another plane and not a chip) then you're going to be involved in an AIRPROX unless you take some correcting action as it's headed straight for you.

Thanks for teaching me something new.

rc is the cause of all ufo reports from now to forever. the things these do in the sky is not normal to the layperson. some foam, some ham radio work, presto, ufo.

we use spotters to fly these, which means people standing outside who scan the skies while we fly from inside via video relay. the front door is open, they are laughing and telling us how bright it is. its safer to fly in the dead of night than it is in the daytime for many reasons.

I try to cease fear mongering about rc with cams like you read in the news. yes we already know, all full scale pilots in a given forum will hate them.
we've been flying for 20 years here and adding a cam is no different. in the 90s we used a bunch of crappy radio shack leds you could hardly see but enough spliced in parallel was decent. just two of my onboard led's now is greater than that whole lot. for those who fly drones too high, break class d airspace near airports, they were doing that too in the 90's this is just a change in technology. everything will have to adjust around it, not the other way around.

this is simply flying a foam airplane around at night when nobody is out, lots of park flyers are flown around cul de sacs this one just ventures a bit over to another neighborhoods cul de sac for the same flying :) not meaning to start a drone war just mentioning a huge cause of misunderstandings across many fronts.

That and Chinese lanterns (got one stuck on my roof last year, had to get the fire brigade out), Venus, planes, birds, the moon, shooting stars, chimney fires, "the list goes on" to paraphrase Cher and Sonny.

that was a nice response I agree to fully. thanks for not ripping me about flying a toy around the neighborhood that is commonplace. all I have to say is get one, immediately. get a drone for sure you'll be hooked. we can even make them out of pizza boxes with a three mile radius

people need to look for the simplest possibly solution to UFO's and with todays movie technology programming the masses I totally see why some led's in the sky makes one rethink the cosmos. and, they are definitely out to get you :)

what is really sad is the buddies of mine who purposely make quad drones with wire caging and tracer led's, with onboard pc programmers for the lights. its a better ufo than your best CG can come up with because these are just enough to tweak you and not give all the answers. I dont fly to cause them, I fly because its cool and people's perceptions are their own responsibility.

Haha the last RC I had was a B52. I could never master getting it to take off and land without tearing the undercarriage off. I suppose that Piper PA-28s are a bit more durable in real life than models :D I did have a lot of success with the ground-based Peugeot 306 RC car a long time ago, I never managed to crash that :)

Is it a bit like an RC helicopter to fly? I had a lot of success with one my cousin got me for my Xmas a few years ago.

if i could make one suggestion it would be to get thee this

dji phantom

700.00 but its the best flying machine Ive ever owned in 20 yrs. out of the box. quad drone, GPS return to home should signal loss occur, intelligent flight controller, weighs 1.5 kg all up everything is in the box to fly. These are the fastest selling rc device ever made, google it to see. you'll thank me and your wife will hate both of us by the end of the summer, you won't be pried out of the garage with a 6ft cro bar. my statement is also pertinent to this thread as it comes decked out in led's and is a total ufo the first night you fly it

:)

additionally, you can help your neighbors out of their ufo phases, after being the initial cause of them, their logic will be forever indebted.

Ah but can it go down the chip shop and order it's owner a haggis supper and fly it back home :D I wish either the chippy would do home deliveries or move nearer to my house :boxedin:

It sounds good, I'll drop a few hints about Christmas presents and see what happens.

thank you, my thought exactly.

I do get a lot of UFO's of the triangular shape reported. Think Belgium and the Arizona flares (I refuse to believe those weren't flares).

I love how someone thinks they can look up in the sky, and guesstimate size. You can't.
“Ok one last time. These are small, but the ones out there are far away.”

I think you'll fit right in... ☻☺☻

You can't post a proper link if you try. There is a 15 post minimum, I believe.
