Getting the public involved in politics sounds like a great idea, until you notice that the nutcases are most likely to be most vocal about their ideas...

I do hope Mr. Obama has some really knowledgeable people at hand to weed the woo and preserve any grain of sensibility, however rare that might be in a public discussion:

Ladies and gentlemen, I present some quotes from the highest-rated posting and replies to it, as of this writing:

"Alternative health care providers such as nutritionists, acupuncturists, emotional counselors, massage therapists, physical therapists, and chiropractors should be recruited to serve as the front line of defense against the onset of disease and as an adjunct to a doctor's care, should illness still develop. The new health insurance system will be seriously flawed if coverage does not include these adjunct treatment providers. "

"I was successfully treated for Lyme Disease by an alternative practitioner after conventional medicine had failed completely."

"Doctor of Osteopathy - same training and education as an M.D., but taught to look at the entire person, rather than just the symptoms presenting."

"Kids are vaccinated into our "sick care system" soon after birth. This lowers their immunity and gets them into the system."

:jaw-dropp

Maybe sometimes people deserve to get what they wish for, but I feel sorry for anyone that’s going to suffer at the hand of those alt-med lunatics.
Yes, there is a less-than-favourable rating of "alternative medicine" in my choice of words. I'm aware of that. No, I prefer my sugar without C 60 diluted dinosaur urine. ;)

I'm not entirely sure why I'm posting this. It's the American health care system after all, and the only ways it might affect me would be a) if I ever spent a holiday across the Atlantic, or b) my government might be hare-brained enough to try and pull something similar here.

I also doubt that Obama is able to get it done within the current
economic environment... At least not in a sense of what Michael
Moore and the rest of the Industrial World has in mind:

Even without the financial crisis, I don't think anyone thought either Obama's or Clinton's healthcare plans were going to be realized anytime soon. I believe the Democrats are just trying to get movement in that direction and are making it one of their much more long-term goals.

The only way I'll support universal health care is if all existing government plans - Medicare, VA, Medicaid, etc, are scrapped and a new program covering all equally is put in place.

Otherwise it will just be ridiculously expensive, with multiple agencies and bureaucracies sucking up dollars when just one would do.

Unfortunately in my country (CR) we have goverment which wants reform our healthcare in opposite direction(they want it like it is currently in USA) then Democrats in USA want. (They have first part in place, but rest is getting less popular in coalition)We have pretty good healthcare and it is quite OK.(We have fixed insurance which goes to common pool from which is drawn.)

So some countries have truly hair-brained goverment...
