U.N. accuses Syria forces of crimes against humanity
BEIRUT (AP) – A U.N. investigation concluded Monday that Syrian forces committed crimes against humanity by killing and torturing hundreds of children, including a 2-year-old girl reportedly shot to death so she wouldn't grow up to be a demonstrator.
. . .
The report by a U.N. Human Rights Council panel found that at least 256 children were killed by government forces between mid-March and early November, some of them tortured to death.

"Torture was applied equally to adults and children," said the assessment, released in Geneva. "Numerous testimonies indicated that boys were subjected to sexual torture in places of detention in front of adult men."
. . .
The panel said government forces were given "shoot to kill" orders to crush demonstrations. Some troops "shot indiscriminately at unarmed protesters," while snipers targeted others in the upper body or head, it said.

It quoted one former soldier who said he decided to defect after witnessing an officer shoot a 2-year-old girl in Latakia, then claim he killed her so she wouldn't grow up to be a demonstrator.

The list of alleged crimes committed by Syrian forces "include murder, torture, rape and other forms of sexual violence," said the panel's chairman, Paulo Sergio Pinheiro, a Brazilian professor. "We have a very solid body of evidence."

Now even the Arab League has turned against the Assad regime. He still has allies in Iran and Hezbollah though.

And what's going to happen if/when the regime falls? It's hard to imagine there won't be reprisals when children have been raped, tortured and killed.

Given Syria's volatile, unpredictable mix of ethnicities, loyalties and allies, it's anyone's guess what will happen next, and if so, when. I will, however venture the following: history books are getting a serious rewrite this year.

I bet Russia and China prevent even a sternly worded letter from being sent to Assad.

If people in your family were murdered, would you be satisfied with a very, very angry letter?

The last guy that got a very angry letter also got NATO set on him. The backing of the Arab League is going to inflame the sentiment against the regime even more. The people of Syria will know they now have friends outside Syria. The defections from the armed forces will rise. The idea behind the letter in this circumstance is still carries some power, since it is the idea of revolution that is also powerful.

Stalin and Saddam, sure. But Hitler? He had a little wuss of a 'stache.
But it was iconic! So much so no one dares wear it today. Assad has one 16 year old kids grow to try to pass for 21 so they can buy beer.

Assad still has the enthusiastic support of President Chavez. That's really all you need.
