Two year old abstract artist

I'll believe that anything anyone wants is art.

I'm willing to render the term useless.

I'm not willing to believe that anything anyone wants is good.

Exactly. Nail on the head as usual, QC.

The problem with your argument, Luchog, is that it automatically equates "art" with "good art", which obviously isn't true (even allowing for the necessarily subjective nature of the word "good") . There is a presupposituion that labelling something as art labels it worthy of contemplation or attention or praise. Not true.

The point of the argument being made here is not that everything is art, but that everything someone says is art is art. That's uncontestable, really.

What is of course contestable is that everthing someone says is art is good art, but on that you're making a subjective definition anyway. Feel free to disagree if to your particular tastes a piece is successful; or interesting; or appealing; or thought-provoking; or aesthetically or technically brilliant; or if it matches your sofa or not; but do not feel free to prescribe what is and is not art .
