And how long until the body count starts to go up again? My lair is 27.3 degrees C at the moment at 50% humidity. It's uncomfortable. The average summer temperature for my room/office/den is 30 to 35 degrees C; I discovered the trickle vent in April and that's taken the temperature down a lot! Exposing yourself to absurd temperatures is lethal. This man is a complete fool and a danger to everyone around him.

Relatives of Brown, Neuman and Shore vow to keep an eye on Ray should he attempt to rebuild the self-help empire that included best-selling books, motivational seminars, speaking engagements and $10,000-a-head weekend retreats.
They planned to confront Ray as he left prison and ask him to sign a "promise" to adhere to certain ethical practices. It was not immediately known whether they were able to do so or whether he signed. The promise also was sent this week to 160 other self-help practitioners -- including well-known personalities such as Deepak Chopra, Ram Dass, Tony Robbins, Suze Orman, Oprah Winfrey and Dr. Phil McGraw.
The promise was issued by a new foundation founded in the memory Brown, an avid skier, surfer and free spirit who had a large circle of friends. Her parents, George and Ginny Brown, attended Ray's trial and founded SEEKsafely, an organization that educates consumers about the unregulated self-help industry.

I lived in Sedona for seven years (got all of my cells replaced and blew town). All in all, a great place. (I never went to a sweat lodge, and it was still a great place.) Walking around in the hills was a life treasure. The old cowboys and prospectors were great, the musicians were great so long as they didn't look down their noses at anyone who wasn't into the "Sedona Sound", the native Americans were great so long as they didn't change their name to "Sun God" and drag tourists around in the hills chanting and selling sacred water. The California whiner tourist how dare you smoke your cigar in your regular bar when I'm here visiting types were a PITA. The little Indian guy who used to walk around town in his sarong sporting a katana and daikatana until the cops asked him to leave them at home was interesting. The timeshare salespeople were fun. Some of the spiritual philosopher types sitting around in the coffee houses were very interesting; exploring the intuition is worthwhile, so long as you don't read too much into what you find. Plenty of good restaurants in town. Beautiful church, they put on concerts there, heard Emanuel Ax play there once.

Then there was every halfassed enlightened soul in the world come to Sedona in search of the other half. Conspiracy theorists, pendulum predictors, ear candlers, aura readers, people with highfalutin names like angel spirit diva that they liked better than the name their mom and dad gave them were out peddling their point of view to anyone interested. And finally there were the true charlatans, the ones who dropped crystals on the path and told whoever found them that it was an omen of a major life change and you need my guidance to fully take advantage of it I've got a slot tomorrow at 10 can you make it. Them I can't describe better than (or for that matter, anywhere near as well as) this:

In the absence of legally binding efforts to root out fraud, Kirby Brown's family and friends have come up with another way to hold all those motivational speakers and authors accountable. They've launched a national campaign called "The Promise" that asks providers to sign a pledge saying they'll adhere to ethical and safe practices. Through their website, www.seeksafely.org, they've asked more than 170 influential practitioners to sign on. Ginny says for reasons she can't comprehend, there have been few takers.

The Browns say their initiatives aren't an indictment against the entire self-help industry. They know there are plenty of qualified professionals who hold themselves to high standards and provide solid advice that can lead to positive life changes. Most are not snake oil salesmen. But the Browns also know Kirby and the others will not have died in vain if more people begin to question — instead of blindly follow — the practices of a teacher or guru. George puts it this way — none of us should ever surrender our critical thinking.

Personally, I'm inclined to think this is one of many indictments against the "self-help" industry.

But I may just be being cynical, rather than skeptical.

The "promise" is mostly an exercise in emotion laden silliness and I'm not surprised they don't have many takers.

1. Truthful. Consumers will receive accurate information about the author’s, leader’s or speaker’s professional degrees, credentials and experience.

"Your presenter is paid up in full to the organization that provided his credentials".

2. Accurate. We will clearly delineate what is personal opinion, belief or speculation as opposed to information that is supported by third party scientific research.

"The testimonies and results you saw in our ads are not representative of most participants" And it is all opinion and belief.

3. Respectful. Participants will be able to freely express opinions, without fear of public humiliation, ridicule, shame or physical abuse.

This is just silly, how can we possibly promise how potentially insecure and socially inexperienced clients (like you) will react?

4. Protective. When people reveal deeply personal experiences, we recognize the responsibility to advise all seekers to enlist the aid of licensed professionals to provide service that may be beyond the scope of the event, seminar or retreat.

Enlist the aid of a licensed professional instead of us and save thousands of dollars.

5. Integrity. The leader will provide personal witness by living the program being taught.

We just wish that we had a program like this when we were where you are. Of course we don't follow our programs, but if we did we would have gotten to where we are much more quickly and easily. Imagine the advantage you have over what we blah blah blah.

6. Safe. If engaging participants in a physical activity, there will be appropriate medical support available in case of injury. The leader will have a comprehensive risk management plan to minimize any risk taken by participants and clearly explain any potential risks that are part of the event.

We will provide large cushy balls you can get inside of, but that may impact laughter and ridicule commitments made in #3.
