The following story is circulating in Athens during the last week but unfortunately I don't have to provide any links. Since I attended several New Year's Eve parties I heard this story in various places.

According to this conspiracy theory, the tsunami wasn't caused by an earthquake but by underwater nucelar tests that were performed by the Americans.

Does this make sense and if it doesn't can we debunk this story?

Thanks.

An underwater nuclear test that is identical in every way with an earthquake. Right on an earthquake fault zone. That produces no measureable nuclear radiation in the atmosphere (which one of that magnitude undoubtedly would).

Uninformed cafe talk...

What ? the Americans ? not the Israelis or the French ? makes no sense at all ! ;)

I suggest you choose parties with more care next year. Obviously stronger things than normal recreational stuff has been at work.

This was a strength 9 quake (as registered by seismologers all over the world), even among killer quakes that is a grandfather quake. I think I saw the figure 20,000 Hiroshima bombs (of 200 kilotons), that is 4,000 megatons. Nobody has ever made such a bomb.

And even assuming the Americans are chaotic evils and do posess such a weapon, what exactly would compel them to explode it off the coast of Indonesia? What use would such an act be to them??

After all, the main value of nuclear weapons is their use as a deterrent. What use is a deterrent you cannot tell anybody about?

I can easily picture woo-woos claiming that the Americans did it because they thought Osama BL was hiding in Aceh with all the remaining high ranking members of Alqaeda, members of the Tamul Tigers, and most of Hamas and PLO, in order to plot the next 9/11 ...

I think the figure being bandied about, (which as an indication of the scale of magnitude that would be required to do the job), is about 1,000 nuclear bombs equivalent.

Think about what sort of force would be needed to create a wave that large and deadly. We aren't talking about just a big wave, but one that can travel half way around the world.

It was so big, it has affected the wobble of the planet. (Only to a small extent, but an indication of the size of the forces involved).

The quake was measured by instruments in laboratories around the world by many different scientists. To deceive all these people would be impossible.

Yeah. So, instead of loading a truck with a few tons of TNT or sending a couple of cruise misiles (one at each end of the table, they're that precise), they took the greatest nuke in history and set it off somewhere off the coast, triggering widespread mayhem in half a dozen countries. ....Yeah, I suppose that for a true Woo, it would make sense.

Run this one by the conspiricists, Cleo:

Moby Dick farted.

As usual, people are looking in the wrong direction: In this case, they're looking down, when they should be looking up.

The United States is experimenting with weapons that are both cost-effective and deadlier than nuclear weapons. The solution is, figuratively speaking, in our backyard. Asteroids.

Clearly, the CIA have used the Hubble telescope to test an asteroid by dropping it in the Indian ocean near a rebel enclave (the US, obviously, is siding with the Indonesian government over the Aceh rebels). As we can see, the test preformed over and above all expectations.

Bush was loath to pay to repair the mess, until Powell took him to one side and pointed out that, 'if you break it, you own it'. Not the first time he's had to dispense this advice.

That only remained for the CIA to bribe all the seismology centres to give readings consistent with an earthquake. The rest, like so many Asian villages, is history.

What's disappointing is that once again, I'm forced to spell out the obvious to you people.

Well, it would be consistent with the shock and awe and the preemptive strike against terrorists theories. The whole world has sure been shocked and potential terrorists in at least 7 or 8 countries will certainly never think of hitting the Free World again ;)

Consistent with the fact that very few seismologists were hurt in the tsunamis. They were clearly warned and could escape ;)

But... who warned the elephants, wild dogs etc? And why??

You know full well they are on CIA's payroll, just like dolphins ! Actually, a few dolphins have been sacrified (more unforgivable crimes) to bring the nukes into the geological fault. In the same vein, I wouldn't be surprised to hear that rats infected with rabies have been deliberately released in order to increase casualties ...

Hi folks and happy New Year.

Apparently the Saudi's have donated $10M for the tsunami relief fund, ten Million dollars eh!! Surely $10M is arse pocket change to the kingdom of Saudi Arabia and as for Kuwait, they aren’t listed. I have no idea what a drilling rig with all the supporting paraphernalia costs but I don’t think you could buy many with ten poxy mill. What short memories these people have.

Now as for that nest of bastards in the Vatican. If ever there was a case for opening up that black hole of a bank, then this is it. Never have the god squads been under so much pressure to explain how jeebus could do/allow this. They don’t even have the savvy to make a gesture. How much money did that nasty old ratbag mother Teresa bung into an ever lasting, high interest no possible return account. We are talking about the money she collected for the children and the destitute in India. Well the children and the destitute in India need that money. They need it now.

No doubt the response from the rosary bead mob will be, "she built hospitals in Calcutta". Really? Well then she must have used some sort of Klingon cloaking device because nobody can find them.

Now on to serious matters. (Mark Lewis On)
I have had a word with my very good friend Iain M Banks and he assures me that it would be a trifling matter for one of his General System Vehicles to displace an Abrams/Challenger tank into St Peters square. I will be responsible for aiming/firing the thing and me mate big Dave will load them heavy bullets into the back of the cannon.

Now then. My address to the pontiff. I have thought long and hard as to how best I can get the message across. I think a direct approach is most effective.

YO! BUCKET HEAD!
Cough up some poke or me and me mate Dave will turn this kip into backfill.
That should get his attention.

It’s been suggested before that I lack subtlety when addressing religious leaders. Any advice?

Not to be nitpicky, but India is not accepting foreign aid. That seems to be their standard policy in situations like this.

toddjh.

I'm having a problem with this. Are you saying they reject food, medicine, water,

As I understand it, they reject material assistance from people or organizations in foreign countries. They do accept some aid in the form of professional expertise and equipment loans, and some assistance from international agencies like the U.N.

But they appear to be pretty well prepared to handle this crisis. They're even donating money and equipment to help Sri Lanka. Part of the reason they want to handle everything themselves is to dispel their past image as a beggar and show their self-reliance.

India and Indonesia are having problems with the food they are being sent. They have strict dietary restrictions and they do not accept everything.

....which will soon be twisted into yet another conspiracy theory. This time, it will be McDonald's causing the quake so they can serve a standard menu in Calcutta.

Yes I see now that India may be more self reliant than I gave them credit for but is this not a case of cutting the nose off to spite the face. A wee bit of Googleing suggests those people need help. Despite any dietary restrictions! Amoxicillin by any other name is still Amoxicillin. I refuse to believe that the affected coastal regions of India have no use for medical assistance.
