For many years, the vast Majority of Americans have asked to make Daylight Saving Time permanent, but no Administration has been able to get it properly done, until now. I am proud to announce that the House of Representatives has passed the Bill, and it has now gone to the Senate for final approval. People are sick and tired of having to change their clocks twice a year. It is foolish, inconvenient and, in some cases, very costly. For Cities and States with Watchtowers, and hard to reach places, it costs Millions of Dollars. A recent case was made that it is also bad for your health in the anxiety it creates. Leading Medical, Crime, and Economic Studies have shown that ceasing the biannual time change, giving us one extra hour of natural sunlight in the evenings, will help Decrease Robbery and Murder Rates, Reduce Car Accidents (especially those involving Pedestrians!), Lower Risk for Cardiac Issues, Stroke, and Seasonal Depression, Make It Safer for Children to Walk Home from School, Increase Time with your Family, Strongly Support Extracurricular Activities, Be a Big Boost to Sports, Fitness, Tourism, Retail, and the Restaurant Industries (and more!), and Save Money on Energy Bills, because everyone will be enjoying an EXTRA HOUR OF DAYLIGHT. In other words, leave it as it is now, and never change again. This is an issue that Republicans, Dumocrats, and Independents can unite behind. If explaining to kids what "socialist, communist" means involves telling them that it means taking away their healthcare, there are an awful lot of kids who are going to think that the GOP is a communist party.

Flashback to 1987, the Iran Contra scandal (for you youngsters, see Google) during which I was teaching Social Studies in a public high school in the Bronx. We were doing a general curriculum unit on Latin America. I had actually spent the previous summer in Nicaragua, visiting many schools during the Sandinista revolution, including one in Ocatal with several students who were injured by the Contras, and many of their stories we captured on audio and videotape.

I subsequently arranged for my students to have pen pals there (youngsters see Peanuts.) Most of them spoke Spanish as a first language so translation wasn’t an issue. Majority of the correspondence withered away, but one girl had a good back and forth over time with her counterpart. Because of Iran Contra being so prominent in the news here they talked a lot about it. When I told her about my tapes she learned to use the school’s primitive video editing deck and cut a short documentary that she showed in class.

That led to a whole discussion about what Iran Contra was, and how our tax money was illegally funding these people doing this. One kid, in fury, shouted, “Dang! The US is acting like a bunch of COMMUNISTS in Nicaragua!”

We tried it in the UK for a few years, decades ago, but it was abandoned.

Back in 1968 there was a three year experiment to keep British Summer Time in place throughout the year. On average, there was a huge reduction in road casualties but this has since been attributed to new drink-driving legislation in 1967.

In northern Scotland however, there was a net increase in the number of people killed or seriously injured on the roads. During the darkest days of December, sunrise would not take place until 10am in some places.

Well, a watch is a kind of clock, isn't it? It would be hard to see in a clock tower, of course, but then everyone has a phone these days, so it doesn't really matter, and a watch would probably be cheaper than a great big clock, so that's also saving on time, and not just on daylight time, but nightdark time as well! Double savings! 1600%! Great affordability! MAKE TIME SAVINGS GREAT AGAIN! We'll have lots of extra time to sell to other countries! Trillions of dollars! Defying history and physics! They'll be begging us to make a deal!
