Blancolirio channel covered this and did not blame the military. The GPS jamming was documented and the usual alerts given.


He is, however, angry that the short flight was allowed to proceed at all as there was no safe approach for them to their destination. A moonless night made visual approach through mountains dangerous. An instruments approach was not authorised as the destination's automatic weather station was out of service so they had no barometric altimeter update (this was also reported and should have been known) and GPS could not be relied upon due to the scheduled and documented GPS jamming from White Sands.

In fact the flight requested and got the GPS jamming halted, but then they declared they had sight of the destination and could proceed on visual after all, so the GPS jamming recommenced. Their visual approach went wrong and they didn't quite clear a mountain.

In the end, he blames Congress for a rule that tempts inexperienced pilots into riskier situations. It's complicated, but he makes his case very clearly. The video is 18 minutes.

Plus, as incompetent as Trump is, I don't think this could be blamed on him. It seems like the type of legitimate weapons research that would probably be done under any administration. And while some of the staffing cuts done under the name of "saving money" were foolish, this particular incident doesn't seem to be related to budget cuts.

I don't use GPS when I drive. That has not yet caused me to crash.

Yeah but roads are pretty simple to navigate... they are only in 2 dimensions, and if you don't know where you are going, you can always pull off somewhere. Its a little harder when you are in an aircraft, with limited fuel, and can go in pretty much any direction (some of which can lead you into a mountain).
And commercial flights always seemed to get where they were going in the many years before GPS existed.

Not a pilot, but it is possible that those commercial flights used tricks that were gradually removed from service over the years.

Why spend the money running some sort of radio beacon (as well as training your pilots on how to use the equipment) when GPS is more accurate and USUALLY more reliable.

Yes, I thought I recognised it, I watched the vide. The main cause is trying to get in to that airport at night.
Blancolirio pretty much nailed it as usual.
