Trump's Second Term

USA moves to limit visas for foreign students to four years, shorter than is necessary for many to complete a Master's or Doctorate program.

The astonishing thing is the cut in journalists visas. Currently they are indefinite, so the BBC journalists in the US can remain as long as they are employed by the BBC, often years. Now it is reduced to 240 days. This effectively means there will no longer be resident journalists. I am unclear if they can reapply every 240 days for a visa, but it certainly makes it easy for the US to expel foreign journalists who report unfavourably about Trump (Yes BBC I am looking at you!).

All Yanks I worked with when they visited here in Oz were very surprised we have separate leave and sick day entitlements by law.

Anyway, back to the fray!
Working at Dell* in Limerick, I know mangement were mad to try and convince employees that sick leave was actually annual leave and that shift allowance (a bonus) counted towards basic pay for minimum wage calculations, both against employment law.

* I worked there at the time Polish neo nazis stole the Arbeit macht Frei sign from Auschwitz. The rumour among workers was Michael Dell paid them to steal the sign so he could use it himself. We weren't joking.

Perhaps it's less astonishing when one takes into account that the Trump Administration is doing its best to establish authoritarian rule. Any media that they don't control is thus to be suppressed or silenced, if they can get away with it.

I see that Trump has broken all the records again, he is now the GOAT at the lowest approval rate of any president! Number 1 again!!!

Trump is going to tariff generic drugs that we import. It takes 3 years to do just the paperwork and approval by FDA after the plant has been built. It is called process validation. These days it requires a dedicated set of reactors, centrifuges etc.

Even for the simplest product, there is a 6 month stability test of the pills.

it can take years to simply find a suitable location to built a factory. it's a pretty big deal to built a giant building, then fill it with tens of millions of dollars of manufacturing equipment and hire hundreds of people to set it up and keep it running. american manufacturing runs lean, and there's not pharma companies with production lines sitting idle.

in the meantime, generics will just be more expensive and harder to get. and he's made dozens of similar decisions, just making things a little harder day after day.

you have to wonder if his insanity is going to bury him first, or us.

He knows manufacturing greater than anyone.

We did get one Covid drug and the vaccines thru in a year. Generic drugs do not have patient tests, only a few animal tests. But making drugs here, the cost is a big issue. Each chemical and process test would require a lot of cost cutting issues.

all that took was a total international effort. this is putting pressure on companies to spend the next decade disrupting and moving existing manufacturing to places that don't yet exist to do something less profitable. maybe they can switch some existing production over to generics, but that comes with opportunity cost too

plus, pharma factories are large, climate controlled buildings that need a lot of electricty. if that sounds familiar, it's because they'll be competing with trillions of dollars in data center construction to get their facilities built.
