US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has severely criticised some of America's Nato allies, while announcing a six-month review of the presence of US forces in Europe.

"It's a review that some countries will fail, and others will pass with flying colours", he said at a meeting of Nato defence ministers in Brussels, singling out allies that he suggested had been "free-riding".

The problem certainly isn't in the "if it ain't broken" part, though the pool had serious issues that were worth trying to fix. The "don't break it" part feels like it's underselling what went on, though.

The problem was and is in the extreme corruption, irresponsibility, incompetence, toxic propaganda, and so on that have been integral in every step that the Trump Administration took. All this hubbub about the algae may be fun and easy to mock and meme and is embarrassing to them, but it's also just a result and not really the real problem.



I'm going to have to object, again. Complaints about zero integrity in this administration and in the Republican Party in general are well warranted, yes. In the country? Not so well warranted. The Democratic Party has consistently and actively worked to uphold the trustworthiness and integrity of the government.

We certainly deserve to take a very real hit and much mockery because of the Republican Party, but there's little value in accepting bothsiderism, whatever the form.


Adding to that - a tiny, vulnerable minority. The Republican Party largely acts like bullies when it comes to who they go after, either way. They're the stealing candy from a baby while mocking the baby crowd, politically speaking.




Correction - partially back. His fixes tend to be very incomplete in practice.

I agree 100% about the GOP, but not quite willing to put a Halo on the Democratic Party
I am going to vote straight Democratic ticket in November, but as the lesser of two evils rather than as the Party that will solve all our problems.
I don't really like either party, frankly.

You join us in the rest of the democratic world, where the current ruling party is usually considered the lesser of a handful of current evils, installed on probation.

I'm not particularly interested in putting a halo on the Democratic Party, either, as I've noted on many occasions. Credit where credit's due, though. The Democratic Party has indeed consistently and actively worked to uphold the trustworthiness and integrity of the government. There are criticisms that can be made about some of the methods that they've used to try to do so, sure, and criticisms that can be made about a bunch of other things, but there's very little real ground to argue against the statement I actually made there. There's also very little ground to assume that the Democratic Party would or could magically fix everything, especially on a now, now, now timeline.

Alternately said, in American politics, the Democratic Party is basically a distinctly flawed person mostly trying to do right by the country and make things better when they can. There is plenty of room for unhappiness with the flaws and mistakes, of course. The Republican Party is more like a charismatic and sociopathic lunatic who will lie to your face with a smile and shank you in the back without dropping that smile if it suits them. The Democratic Party can certainly be annoying and there are plenty of reasonable complaints to be made, but the Republican Party is orders of magnitude worse. Lesser of two evils? Certainly. Don't really like either party? Entirely understandable! Does that change anything meaningful? Of course not.

I didn't say that Republicans had zero integrity, just that having established the principle that a new executive is not bound by commitments made by the previous executive, others will be cautious about trusting commitments made by an executive for longer than the existence of that executive. (Of course in Trump's case there is no guarantee he will stick to commitments he made.)

My point is that trust lost is hard to regain; not that most Republicans aren't honourable.
