Not being a American, I don't really know what the Democrats do that makes voting on them being like voting on the Devil, but I gather it is something something about their economic policy. Possibly also their stance on abortion, and DEI.

Really short version? A get out the vote organization is being asked by the DoJ not to use the American flag in specific states because it might confuse their favored group, MAGA.

I have many words that I could say about such, none of them particularly polite. I admit that I hope legal action will result, though.

I think I get the bit about using small American flags to identify houses where they were going around to nudge their supporters to go out and vote (though I have no idea what "1s and 2s" are). But I don't understand what the reason was that they were asked not to do that.

FWIW, ChatGPT thinks it's the most strong supporters, which would make sense. From the context, I though it was a type of housing unit.

In this context, “1s and 2s” almost certainly refers to a voter classification system used in political campaigning and canvassing.

Campaigns often rank voters on a scale like this:

• 1 = strong supporter / very likely to vote for your candidate
• 2 = leaning supporter / probably supportive
• 3 = undecided
• 4 = leaning opponent
• 5 = strong opponent

So when the passage says volunteers knocked on the doors of their “1s and 2s,” it means they were targeting voters believed to be supportive and trying to make sure they actually turned out to vote on Election Day (“Get Out The Vote” or GOTV work).

The flags at the driveway ends were apparently a way to help volunteers quickly identify those supporter households in the field.

I don't think it's something that can be broken down rationally. It's a mishmash of negative connotation that one need not analyze. Anti-Democratic rhetoric is relentless, wide-ranging, and often subliminally tied to trigger words and fears. It's a little like war propaganda where you're told the enemy has tails and eats your babies for breakfast. We know those posters of enemy soldiers with dripping fangs bayoneting infants are not accurate. But we're taught from the cradle that where there's smoke there's fire, and numbed by the barrage of nonsense we're left with the factless notion that they're some sort of awfully bad.

The reason we don't vote for the devil becomes existential. It's not about what he might or might not do, but about what he is.

Who else could make a phone call on the Saturday before a Monday holiday? Amazing telephony skills. By the way, does he think America's Memorial Day is marked in every other country in the world? (I admit I had to look it up to see which holiday he was talking about.)

Also, if Trump thought peace was so urgently important maybe he shouldn't have destroyed it in the first place, and maybe he shouldn't now be telling his negotiators to go slow and take their time. He's got all those allies on the phone to beg them again to dig him out of the hole he created and can't escape from without putting US forces lives on the line with an invasion. And I fully expect they told him hell, no again.

They were asked not to do that because the MAGA folk are so stupid they think the American flag represents MAGA, not America, so the MAGA get-out-the-vote people were getting confused and angry when they found someone flying the flag who isn't MAGA.

DOJ is asking non-MAGA Americans not to fly the American flag because the Trump administration's DOJ is in the tank for MAGA, and is therefore endorsing the MAGA point of view that assumes the American flag belongs to MAGA, not to all Americans.
