'It Will Become a Landmark': Trump Defends Giant Golden Statue of Himself Amid Much Debate

For a slightly fuller quote -

“I very much appreciate their support, and all that they went through to get it done! They are very good people,” Trump added. “Those playing the Blue Monster, at Doral, are absolutely in love with it. Congratulations to all involved. With time, it will become a landmark."

Trump likes it, in short.

Personally, I think that it's a shiny abomination and also has very low potential to be a meaningful landmark.

While on that general topic, though -

Pastor Burns defended the installation via a lengthy public statement after critics compared it to the biblical golden calf, a symbol associated with idolatry.

“What amazes me is how quickly some people have compared this beautiful statue, created, and made possible by more than 6,000 patriots, to a golden calf or idol worship,” he said. “Let me be very clear. We worship the Lord Jesus Christ and him alone.”

“You may dislike President Trump. That is your choice. But you are in gross error if you think for one second that I worship this magnificent statue or anything made by human hands,” he added. "This was not idol worship… This was patriotism.”

Pastor Burns has a point. It's not really a golden calf, as directly depicted in the Bible. The golden calf was something of a physical proxy to make things more real to the people, after all. Trump and Trump's image are exceedingly present even without this proxy because of the media, though, so the statue doesn't really have room to fill the same role as the golden calf. Burns is still a ridiculous MAGA propagandist who claims to be a Christian pastor while preaching Republican propaganda that conflicts with Jesus' teachings, of course. Separately, if we go with the potential interpretation of the story where the golden calf was intended to be used as a proxy for Moses in practice, rather than an actual departure from Yahweh, Burns has no real ground to stand on in the first place anyways.

To poke at his reasoning on Trump, which carries over from the specific topic that was in question -

Trump gets infinite mulligans based on farcical premises. Honestly, when taken completely out of context, it could be a reasonable thing to invoke for a Christian pastor if the considerations were narrowed to only one aspect of the larger issue of how we should react to Trump's words and actions. At least, it would be if it was consistently applied. Unfortunately for anyone trying to actually defend him with that, he condemned Biden vehemently and on far less grounds (among other relevant things). He's just yet another deeply dishonest Republican propagandist hiding his propaganda behind a thin facade of religious pretense to lend it legitimacy.

I don't normally describe behavior like Burns' as delusional, either way. Calling him a con man would be far more accurate.
