Neither claim, Bessent's or the random dude's, means anything if there is no date to compare either figure to. I don't think year-over-year on gas, it's reasonable in one sense but there are also a ton of short-term variables. But if someone presented this on TV why did nobody just check the AAA website? They're allowed to do that. Also, it varies by locale quite a bit. Is he comparing D.C. to Northern Virginia?

If I get around to navigating a couple pages back I'll check on what the news outlet is but at this point why take someone's word for it?

I don't know if this program dropped the ball but there's a good chance it did.

I can't speak for other jurisdictions but I work for a school district with crashing demographics - it is in the wealthiest part of town, although there are a lot of state laws here that work to equalize funding among districts. At the end of an interminable "desegregation" lawsuit, which didn't involve this district, a judge ruled that any child can attend any public school in the area as long as it has the capacity. The district must serve its own students first.

I am ... certain that the district is not cherrypicking its open-enrollment students. Not for grades, behavior or anything else. As far as I know it is strictly first-come, first-served. It does, unfortunately, pull that child's funding from another district.

Transportation is an issue, the out-of-district parents already have to show a greater commitment than they would to their home school. Other than that the funding is equal, but we tend to automatically have more-involved parents. It's sad for public education as a whole and sad but I'm glad there's an option for some families - and if I ever find out it's NOT fair I would blow the whistle in a heartbeat.

Sorry, this has next-to-nothing to do with Trump.
 
Back to the shutdown: I hated that the Democrats "caved," and though I'd love to think there are secret and trustworthy GOP votes to fully fund the ACA, I very much doubt it. I thought it was terrible for the party. But after a little bit I saw less downside. Could it be better for the country?

The shutdown itself has a cost, with Trump perfectly willing to withhold food from the hungry. Maybe he would have chickened out, but maybe not. People being hurt by the shutdown might have been offsetting some of the gains Democrats hoped to make.

There was a claim that legislation ending the shutdown had a provision giving legislators some sort of immunity from questioning from a special counsel. That cannot stand. If they want to pass it, fine, but not linked to this. Nothing should be linked to this - except possibly language to come that will help people keep insurance.

If that doesn't come, I'm thinking the GOP's willingness to throw their constituents to the wolves might not help them. Democratic voters will know Democrats tried. I thought it was the only thing they've done that has shown an ounce of backbone and I was rooting for them as a party.

It's weird listening to microwave mel gibson speak. Can't quite figure out what it is, like he's just about to die, but is still managing to get the words out.
I suspect he's going to be binned by the administration pretty soon. By this time in 2017, the admin had already ditched Bannon, Priebus, Dubke, Spicer, the Mooch, Gorka, Flynn, etc, so the current bunch of plebs are doing pretty well. Seems like it's easier to dodge bullets when you're on your knees.

Amazingly, it will look just like the old one, but running on Windows 95 instead of Windows NT.
