The Empire State building - how the hell would he know what the workers immigration status was?

Apollo - the former NAZIs with more troubling histories were made legal with a series of backpedaling moves in operation Paperclip. Just for questioning became just the innocent ones became just the useful ones. So that was a hell of a stupid project to choose to illustrate an all-American achievement with no undesirable foreigners involved.

At least we know that the building of 30 Rock involved immigrants, even if I have no idea of their legal status; that famous "Lunch atop a skyscraper" photo includes some of them (a couple of Irishmen, a Slovak, and a couple of Swedes, the descendants of whom live not that far from here).
 
I've been working on another project this past week, so this update was delayed.

Most of the people who built the Empire State were Irish or Italian navvies, they were not US citizens. And most of the people who built NASA were German nazis.

IMO Miller is (deliberately ?) missing the point on several points:

  • Maybe illegal immigrants weren't involved in those high profile projects then again who knows ? I can readily believe that anyone involved on the engineering side of the Apollo programme were carefully vetted to ensure that they were in the US legally but what about the person who cleaned the floors or emptied the trash cans ? The immigration status of all the workers on the Empire State Building is likely unknowable. Are illegal immigrants involved in similarly high profile projects now in prominent positions ? Almost certainly not IMO. Instead today's illegal immigrants, like those in the 20's or 60's are doing back breaking, poorly paid, manual labour
  • Back then the path to becoming a legal immigrant was far easier. It was easier to emigrate legally to the US and those whose status was "irregular" could often get it sorted out relatively easily - IIRC Trump's grandmother is a case in point
  • There is a deliberate attempt to blur the lines between illegal immigrants, asylum seekers, those here legally on temporary work visas and green card holders. All brown immigration is bad so let's throw shade on all immigrants

Clearly the intent is to try to claim that the US is broken and cannot deliver amazing projects, which is false, and that the reason for this is because the US has been diluted by illegal immigrants, another falsehood.
