Trump's Second Term

No Good choiches for Schumer who I think was right. You relaly want a shutdown that would have put ev neything in the hand of Musk?
When the CR passed the House, this battle was over. Stupid jot waste recources on a battle you could not win. no matter how dramatic and emtionally satisfying it is.

'No Good Choices' may end up being the epitaph of the USA. In the end constantly choosing the lesser evil just means evil wins.

Has it occurred to anyone that the reason why trump wants Greenland is his perceived size of the landmass. His obsession with 'maps' lately got me thinking, does he have any idea of what the Mercator projection does to the apparent size of land masses on a 2d image?
It’s been pointed out many times. But Trump is not the kind of person who pays attention to people explaining things to him.

Sorry, but I just think Schumer was right that a shutdown just would have played into the hands of Trump and MUsk.
You have to pick your fiths.
And since you have written off the US, just remember that internatinal politics is like nature, and it hates a vacumme. Ihoope you like your new CCP overlords.

Portugal should join the UK, Sweden, Japan and Italy in the Tempest 6th Gen fighter program.
Genuinely didn't realise Sweden were part of that as I thought they always maintained strict ownership of manufacture of their own military aircraft. That is a grouping that could come up with a seriously good aircraft

The Swedes alone have proven themselves to be almost disturbingly good at making military hardware. From the BOFORS anti-aircraft gun in World War II to sterling engine submarines that could even sneak up on US aircraft carriers (we could've used that tech edge now). I'm glad we have them in NATO now.

I was just searching for something on my backup drive and found I had saved this at some point a couple of years ago. I may even have posted it here.

The larger the mob, the harder the test. In small areas, before small electorates, a first-rate man occasionally fights his way through, carrying even the mob with him by force of his personality. But when the field is nationwide, and the fight must be waged chiefly at second and third hand, and the force of personality cannot so readily make itself felt, then all the odds are on the man who is, intrinsically, the most devious and mediocre—the man who can most easily adeptly disperse the notion that his mind is a virtual vacuum. The Presidency tends, year by year, to go to such men. As democracy is perfected, the office represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. We move toward a lofty ideal. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.

H. L. Mencken, Baltimore Evening Sun, July 26, 1920

You can't exactly say you weren't warned.

Well, maybe democracies are all doomed unless the people are well-educated. Oh, that's right, one of our parties has been tearing down public education since 1980. I wonder what effect that has?

Don't forget tearing down the education value in the news - Fox is a really obvious example, as their "opinion" programming masquerades as news.

I'm probably buying a Toyota Tacoma tomorrow. Partly because it's assembled in Mexico and the next batch across the border may cost much more.
Trump seems to think automakers can just magically have plants running in the US overnight.

And he sure doesn't understand just how many auto/truck parts are made all over the world. From tires to light bulbs, and there's a whole lot of stuff in between. He's thrown a big ol' big rock in the pond, and there's no stopping the ripples it created. The question now is, do you just get your feet wet, or do you drown?

These changes have not actually stopped shipping of components or vehicle production. They have simply made everything FIRGHTFULLY more expensive and much slower to produce the same result. So Trebuchet's new Tacoma will cost him ransomed child this week. Next week, it is all three PLUS his wife AND his house. And maybe even this punkin' chunker.

Just wait till he sees how big Antarctica is. All the way round the edge!

To be fair, unless the EU really manages to get it's act together (which I still have some hope for) the choices seem to be CCP overlords, Putin as overlord or Trump/Musk. And in that case the CCP is really the least of the evils. Which is saying a lot unfortunately. I'm still shocked at the speed and simplicity with which the US democratic institutions are being removed. And all the 2A 'guns for freedom' are cheering it along.

Law and order

Trump: "In major cities like New York, Chicago, and Washington, mothers can't walk their children to the park without fear of being shot, or killed, or raped, or anything. Women can't ride the subway without worrying that a hoodlum will shove them onto the train tracks."
...or grab their pussy? Some males can't help themselves I'm told.

Trump "jokes" about invading Greenland while sitting next to NATO secretary: "We really need Greenland for national security. It's very important. You know, we have a couple bases on Greenland already. We have quite a few soldiers there. Maybe you'll see more and more soldiers go there, I don't know. What do you think about that, Pete? Don't answer that, Pete."

Trump doesn't joke, his statements range from lies, through delusion to outright fantasy, but at the moment it comes out of his orange painted burger hole he believes it.
