Trump's Second Term

i would hope not. people don't seem too stoked to me right now. the trumpsters at my job have all been pretty quiet and a little angry, which only half of that is new behavior
I think people will rapidly get tired of the constant chaos.

Indeed. I think it was Terry Pratchett who wrote somewhere that what people really actually want is for each day to be pretty much like the one before. Unless you're at the very bottom of the misery ladder, of course. But for everybody else, stability is a civilizational good.

This is the entire point of a democracy with universal norms and a peaceful transition of power: so that individuals and organizations companies can plan ahead and invest for decades instead of only until the next political crisis.

That's an important point. President Trump's purported conditions for relaxing tariffs were based on factually false claims. There was no way for Mexico or Canada to satisfy the terms. It would be like my neighbor threatening to call the police unless I stopped psychically willing her petunias to die. Then this all turns into a performative song-and-dance to make Trump look like a strong leader. I confess out loud that I will stop killing my neighbor's flowers with blasts of psionic energy, and she backs down telling everyone else, "I showed that guy!"
Why do liberals hate petunias so much?! More seriously, Reason had an article on the logical inconsistency of Trump's tariff policy. Writing about his holding off on implementing them, they noted "But leave all that aside for a moment. Let's assume that Trump sincerely holds this belief: that tariffs are a wealth-generating tool, and that their implementation will return the country to its proper place as the wealthiest, most successful, most respected nation on the planet....Wait, what happened to endless prosperity and success? If tariffs are as great as Trump says they are, he should be implementing them no matter what the leaders of any other silly little countries say or do."

Trump says US sovereign wealth fund could buy TikTok

US President Donald Trump has taken the first step towards setting up a sovereign wealth fund for the United States, and suggested that it could end up buying TikTok.

The president signed an executive order on Monday, to kickstart the process, saying the fund would soon be "one of the biggest".

When Trump first floated the idea of a sovereign wealth fund during his election campaign, he suggested it could be funded by "tariffs and other intelligent things".

Forget an improved national health care scheme, or more housing for everyone, or better transport infrastructure. What the USA really needs right now is to pay China to own an online chat forum that is dying.

Business like nobody has ever seen before... :sarcasm:

This one's transparent: Trump wants to have more money than Musk, and this is one way to do it.

This turned up in my Farcebook feed today. Looked interesting, but not sure how accurate it is... (not sure how Switzerland ends up being Nevada's biggest export trading partner (unless its crooks with Swiss Numbered Accounts), or Hong Kong ends up Utah's biggest.

Trudeau has made it clear that they will target US red states when it comes to the retaliatory tariffs he has imposed in the US.

"OTTAWA — Canada’s retaliatory tariffs will target Republican states and Donald Trump allies.

“Canadians understand that we need to respond to this,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Saturday night. “We need to respond in a way that is appropriate, that is measured but forceful, that meets the moment.”

There are 1,256 items in the first tranche of tariffs that will come into force Tuesday.

The list includes oranges and fruit from Florida, home to Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort; household appliances from South Carolina and Ohio, states to Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Vice President J.D. Vance; and motorcycles and coffee from southern Pennsylvania, which helped return Trump to the White House."

Seems The Fat Orange Turd is not the only one who can play hard-ball.

Egg prices seem set to rise! :ROFLMAO:

Retired Army Veteran, former Republican , now independent and ardent foe of maga. I would stand with the libs.
Good for you, but you're the exception not the rule. Veterans supported Trump in 2024 by a significant margin.

About six-in-ten registered voters who say they have served in the U.S. military or military reserves (61%) support former President Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election, while 37% back Vice President Kamala Harris, according to a Pew Research Center survey conducted in early September.
Edited to add.....

Around 6% of Americans are veterans which means that around 2% of Americans are liberal veterans. That's a considerable number of people for sure but some or many of them will be unable and/or unwilling to take up arms. For example, Mrs Don's uncle is a Vietnam veteran in his mid-70s. Even if his physical health was good enough to participate in the armed resistance, he's suffered badly from PTSD for more than 50 years and would be unlikely to be able to serve again. I doubt that he's alone.

The idea of an armed citizenship rising up against an oppressive government is a tempting message and echoes the US creation story but tens or even hundreds of thousands of citizens with firearms won't be a match for the police, much less the US military. Successful insurrections these days require support from an external national power I can't see a country supplying the US resistance with military aid.

If you've ever seen comedian Jim Jeffries' stand up routine about US Gun culture, you might remember what he said about the militia

"You do know the Government has drones, right? You get that? You're bringing guns to a drone fight!"

A rather quiet day:

3 February 2024
+1: Trump pauses unilateral tariffs after Mexico and Canada agree to increased border patrols
-1: Congressman Andy Biggs introduced the Nullify the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (NOSHA) Act
-1: Trump: "So we're looking to do a deal with Ukraine where they're going to secure what we're giving them with their
rare earth and other things." (Can I get a translation into English, please?)

Current score: -55

One of elonia's spartan stooges is a 25 year old who now has full, direct access to the federal payment system. This can only end well.
