But now that he has tipped his hand, and now that it's generally known how much the American public does not want a trade war, this will weaken the strategy for future use. To be fair, while Thermopylae was a tactical loss on the battlefield, strategically it was the second biggest win of the war, after Salamis, because it bought the time needed to prepare the wooden wall.

Not that Galaxy Brain Musk would know or understand that.

That's an important point. President Trump's purported conditions for relaxing tariffs were based on factually false claims. There was no way for Mexico or Canada to satisfy the terms. It would be like my neighbor threatening to call the police unless I stopped psychically willing her petunias to die. Then this all turns into a performative song-and-dance to make Trump look like a strong leader. I confess out loud that I will stop killing my neighbor's flowers with blasts of psionic energy, and she backs down telling everyone else, "I showed that guy!"

i would hope not. people don't seem too stoked to me right now. the trumpsters at my job have all been pretty quiet and a little angry, which only half of that is new behavior

I'm a veteran and a lib, but then I'm so old I was actually drafted into the Army. Even so, I think you'd find only a small portion of today's veterans are ardent Trumpers. The modern military also has a higher percentage of minorities than the population as a whole and more women than ever. Google's AI gives me this:

The military is relatively diverse compared to the US population as a whole.

Officers are likely less diverse than EM's, but are also better educated. Again, that works against them being Trumpers.
Black and Hispanic vets are certainly not going to be unaware of Trump's hatred of them.
Finally, we have right here on this forum a retired Command Sergeant Major. He may not be a raving liberal, but he's no Trumper.

Trumpy may have backed off the tariffs but I'm not done boycotting american goods and services. My netflix and amazon accounts will remain closed and we are still avoiding anything american made wherever possible until the orange clown is gone.
