Trump's Second Term

Luckily for Trump the French are known for their unwillingness to protest.

They've had a huge base there and reduced the size of it.
The US military presence in Greenland wound down after the cold war but so far as I know they still have treaty rights to reinforce as far as they deem necessary. So there's nothing stopping them defending Greenland from whatever threat they imagine exists. Defence can't be the reason Trump wants to own the island.

The White House Correspondents' Association is cancelling its plans to have comedian Amber Ruffin headline this year's annual fundraising dinner.

"The WHCA board has unanimously decided we are no longer featuring a comedic performance this year. At this consequential moment for journalism, I want to ensure the focus is not on the politics of division but entirely on awarding our colleagues for their outstanding work and providing scholarship and mentorship to the next generation of journalists. Eugene Daniels"

Just yesterday, the White House Deputy Chief of Staff Taylor Budowich said

"This year’s WHCA dinner will be hosted by a 2nd rate comedian who is previewing the event by calling this administration “murderers” who want to “feel like human beings, but they shouldn’t get to feel that way, because you’re not”
What kind of responsible, sensible journalist would attend something like this? More importantly, what kind of company would sponsor such as hate-filled and violence-inspiring event?"

I am sure it had no influence on the WHCA

Why does this come to mind?

I think it's given that the "we need Greenland for national security" is a lie and it is the natural resources Trump et al. want access to. I suspect they may be successful by bribing enough of the population of Greenland with promises of a share of all that wealth under their feet.
He wants the raw earth.

If they think this will save them they are sadly mistaken.

The whole policy towards Greenland is incoherent.

Timothy Snyder pointed out that if the US wants Greenland for its own security against Russia then it would make no sense to be appeasing Russia in Ukraine and threatening to pull out of NATO when Ukraine and NATO are the two best defences against Russia in the first place. Denmark is a founder member of NATO!

Instead of slavering about all the minerals they could get from Greenland, they could have good trade relations with them and their other allies such as Canada, instead of slapping tariffs on them.

Oh, and there is of course the irony that the new shipping lanes that are opening up are a result of climate change, a change that Trump and his party have done as much as possible to deny is even happening.

Meanwhile, scientists have discovered twice as much Lithium under the Salton Sea than Greenland has.

We've had bases on Greenland forever. Whatever defensive value it has it likely already has. I think it's mostly about the minerals and about Trump's love of bullying people out of what is theirs with threats. It's basically a Dane-geld scheme, which he probably thinks he invented, being a stranger to both history and irony.

Russia, who else ..
That's where the incoherence comes in. There is already a military base in Greenland secured through good relations with Denmark, a country which sent more troops to fight and die for American interests in Afghanistan than America did, per capita (as Snyder points out), and if Russia is the country that you are worried about why on Earth would you be busy dismantling an international military coalition against that country and strong-arming the only country fighting Russia on the battlefield into an ignominious surrender?

Clearly a foreign policy aimed at defending against Russia would not be doing these things if the foreign policy was coherent.

It is coherent if you think EU is bunch of freeloaders who bring nothing to the table.

No it isn't. Not even then.

Let's recap:

1. We need Greenland to protect ourselves from our enemy, Russia.
2. EU is a bunch of freeloaders who bring nothing to the table (if you discount sending troops to Afghanistan and Iraq and providing weapons to Ukraine to fight against.... Russia!).

Conclusion: Ooooh, Vlad, so stronk! Let's be friends. I'll abandon the EU and Ukraine and make sweet love to you.....

Donald says using military force to get Greenland "is on the table"

The president on Saturday said he has "absolutely" had real conversations about annexing Greenland, which is currently a semi-autonomous Danish territory.

"We'll get Greenland. Yeah, 100%," Trump said.
He added that there's a "good possibility that we could do it without military force" but that "I don't take anything off the table."
