I can’t believe I’m actually living in this reality. How did the US devolve into this clown show? How can this be happening to one of the most powerful countries on earth?

My guess? Mainly due to deficient education. Sure, all this FOX & Influencer fake machinery will always get to a certain type of people.
But to get such critical mass (50% of a modern western civilization) can only be achieved by having lots of uneducated / ill-educated people.
A certain level of education acts like a vaccine. It makes most people immune to Cult-Virus.

Isn't this how a lot of empires go? Be wildly successful, reach some peak in terms of greatness, status, and territorial gain, and then devolve from there as the empire grows inceasingly insular and dysfunctional, possibly in part because it gets blinded by its own greatness.

Once you accepted the principle (which the US courts accepted), that outside of the US, the US government could torture and detain Muslims without due process, then they accepted the principle you could do that for Latinx, Socialists, Gays. It was easy to justify when the Repulican presidency first started taking away rights post 9/11, you were warned of the slippery slope. You didn't take back all the powers surrendered to the presidency once 9/11 was done with, and just think what you'll lose if there is another terrorist attack, certainly Trump is trying to do everything he can to provoke one.
