Trump's Second Term

On the street, word is the US has declared war on Europe. Right now, a cold one, but one that looks to explode soon enough in the form of Russian aggression... and, I am predicting, backed by not-so-discrete American intelligence support at the very least.

I bet all the F-35s have a kill switch. T.G. Europe has its own GPS. Allies? Never again. The Confederacy is a cyclical madness that has no cure.

Its the same here in Canada. Many people haven't quite realized it yet but those who understand are saying it loud and clear...we are already at war.

at 7:58, if I may quote Zelenskyy, looking at directly at Trump, for Vance's edification: "So, thank you very much."

So before yesterday there's no deal (mineral rights for security guarantees) and Zelenskyy needs the sec. guar., so he goes to the U.S., against standard procedure (the deal should already be in place before travel) because he has no choice, he has to try a hail mary. But the bullying of Trump and Vance kill it.

But why do the media interview in the oval office, from Trump's perspective? Surely he must have planned for Vance to go on the attack, or at least allowed once it started. Did they hope to bully Z. into submission in public? So Z. failed at his hail mary, and Trump failed to bully Z into submission, to the detriment of all - no mineral rights deal, and no security guarantees.

That meeting was performative, pandering to maga morons like MadgeTadge, who in turn will gull credulous voters with their 'Murica First propaganda.

Zelenskyy says that Europe gave a lot, but Trump has to insist that they gave less (than the U.S.), and Z. responds immediately, but gently, "No."

We're now hearing from Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte, who tells the BBC he has spoken with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky twice following the White House meeting.

He says he is "not at liberty to say what was discussed" but shares that he told Zelensky "we have to respect" what Trump has done for Ukraine so far.

Speaking to the BBC, he says Zelensky must "find a way" to restore his relationship with his US counterpart Donald Trump after the two clashed in the White House.

He adds that during Trump's first administration - from 2017 to 2020 - the US approved the sale of the Javelin anti-tank missile system which enabled Ukraine to "fight back" when Russia launched its full-scale invasion in 2022.

"We really have to give Trump credit," Rutte adds.

There may have been an agreement in place before the trip and then Trump and co decided to change it at the 11th hour and Zelensky wouldn't go along. Bait and switch is a part of his negotiating style.

The economist had a good article on the situation suggesting that Vance's offensive was a planned trap and essentially a made-for-tv spectacle. I'm inclined to agree with that viewpoint.

No 10 says Starmer and Zelensky will meet in Downing Street today, ahead of the EU and NATO meeting tomorrow.

To MAGA the statements Trump makes are facts. Reality has nothing to do with it, and bringing it up is the most heinous crime.

Weird. I'm looking at what presumably is the entire press conference in the Oval. At 2:57 Trump says, "We're going to sign the agreement. . . ." but there was no security guarantee, and Zelenskyy wasn't going to sign without that, so what's trump doing?
Dunno. Maybe he thought Zelenskyy would cave under the lights, maybe he wanted his boss to see the failure to sign was Zelenskyy's fault, maybe he's just a vindictive child who wanted to punish Zelenskyy for not signing.

Both sides will have been well prepared. Zelensksyy has been forced to go around the world with a begging bowl. Trump knows this. His claim to be the peacemaker, rather like a trades union negotiator bringing striking workers versus obstinate employers together for bargaining (for example ACAS), means trying to bring about a win-win outcome for both parties. This entails finding out what is the bottom line for each party and what would be the 'deal breaker', as it were. The principles of negotiation haven't changed since Sun Tzu's Art of War. Whilst being a tough negotiator, driving a hard bargain, is what a good negotiator does, it does mean out-staring your opponent to see who blinks first. What Trump wants is to get his small hands on Ukraine's minerals wealth. Using this as a bargaining chip, Trump wants Zelensky to bend but fails to understand that for Zelenskyy and Europe, security guarantees are needed. Zelenskyy has already invited investment in future mining, so that is not new.

Sun Tzu's rules include owning the agenda. This means, if you are the host then the other party is at a disadvantage. They come to you. They are in your territory. Home advantage. So, bringing Zelenskyy to the White House - which Zelenskyy has to agree to because he has to try every avenue to fund Ukraine's defence - is a massive advantage in striking a hard bargain. The glamour of the White House plus international live TV broadcast, meant Trump held the balance of power.

Lesson 8

“Generally, he who occupies the field of battle first and awaits his enemy is at ease; he who comes later to the scene and rushes into the fight is weary.”

This is best explained with my 5th Golden Rule: Control the Agenda.

But three years of war has made Zelenskyy a much tougher negotiator than even the intimidatory location of the bargaining. He knows what he has come for: he needs the USA on Ukraine's side and he also knows Trump is desperate to get his avaricious hands on Ukraine's minerals. So his number one card is holding out in signing the 'deal'. Zelenskyy is as hard as nails.

On realising that Zelenskyy was not browbeaten into signing the deal notwithstanding over a hundred press reporters from all over the world witnessing the spectacle, VP JD Vance tried one last tactic to beat Zelenskyy into submission, and that was to bully and humiliate him by shouting insults. Remember, we are not dealing with polite society here, we are dealing with gangster-mentality men who, just a couple of weeks before, tried to swing the German elections to vote for a fascist party, with Steve Bannon doing a Musk-style 'seig heil' salute. These are people who just recently kicked good citizens out of their jobs because of their personal characteristics. Trump, not to be out-bullying by bully boy Vance, pitched his voice even louder and wagged his finger in Zelenskyy's face. That Zelenskyy showed considerable restraint in not decking Trump, is testimony to his character.

I doubt the two-man assault by Trump and Vance was planned or premeditated, I think it is more a case of what they have been saying to each other in private. 'Who does he think he is, the ungrateful upstart?!'

Trump doesn't want to discuss security because it will get in the way of just getting the deal done. "I don't think you're going to need much security. Once this deal gets done, it's over. Russia's not gonna want to go back . . . ." and Zelenskyy is shaking his head to signal, "no."

Trump seems to believe he can bend history and reality to suit his will.
He has effectively done that for his followers in the United States. It's not hard to find examples of Trump supporters who believe things about history that are absolutely not supported by fact and are instead the propaganda of the Republican Party—particularly of the Trump campaign. It's not hard to see why Trump might think he can just bully and browbeat the rest of the world to believe his nonsense.

Zelenskyy notes that Putin has broken cease-fires 25 times in the past, and Trump at one point comments that he's never done anything like that with Trump, as if Trump can only consider Putin in relation to him and not in relation to anyone else.

Sheesh.

There was one on an late evening News show in the UK last night. Former ambassador to Denmark, Carla J Sands. She was spewing MAGA / Trump / Russian propaganda about Ukraine and Zelenskyy, such as Zelenskyy used US money to buy yachts.

These are the Americans the world sees and hears.

To me the starkest recent example of that was the eating the cats and dogs comment. Trump said it and within days there were videos of people in Ohio noting that ever since the Haitians arrived, cats and dogs had been disappearing. He said it and it immediately became reality for an entire cohort of people.

1984 is on its way

Trump might be out. MAGA will not. Sorry, but US lost all credibility. For decades.
That, and the world now knows (after Dump winning not just once but twice) that even if/when the Democrats or some other party take power again, the US is still just one bad election result away from another four-year psychotic episode. Even with all the horrible things he's doing and saying now, he still has the support of 40-50% of the populace. Something is deeply, deeply wrong with American society, and Dump dying, or another Democrat winning, is not going to fix that.
