The priests don't rule Iran. (Not that islam has priests.) There is a democratically elected parliament (there are issues about eligibility for election), and an elected president (again issues about eligibility for election). The Supreme leader sets 'the tone' ensures conformity with islamic principles e.g. forbidding the construction of nuclear weapons, and is nominally head of the armed forces. The supreme leader is not a dictator, he will merely be replaced by another cleric. The priests are certainly influential but rather more like soviet forces would have commissars to ensure political purity.
