A September outlook report from the United States Agriculture Department estimates that wholesale prices for frozen turkeys will be $1.32 per pound this year, a 40% increase from 2024's average of $0.94 per pound.

The wholesale price is what retailers pay to buy items in bulk. Retailers then decide how much they want to charge consumers.

The reason the birds — traditionally the centerpiece at the Thanksgiving table — are getting more expensive comes down to supply. The number of available turkeys has shrunk in recent years amid slightly weakened demand and avian flu outbreaks, according to USDA data.

More than 3 million turkeys have been impacted by bird flu outbreaks this year, including over half a million this month alone, USDA data shows.

US President Donald Trump has said the "existing structure" of the White House East Wing must be torn down in order to construct a new $250m (£186m) ballroom.

Crews began demolishing parts of the structure on Monday, and two administration officials earlier told the BBC's US partner CBS that it will be completely torn down by the weekend.

It marks a significant expansion of the construction project announced over the summer. Trump previously said his ballroom addition would not "interfere with the current building".

It always does. I suggested earlier somewhere that if the line "Look on my Works, etc." were suggested, Trump would happily have that inscribed on his triumphal arch, without batting an illiterate eye.

On the question of how does he find the time? For one thing, he does nothing much else, and evil is quicker, simpler and cheaper than good. If you feed the poor or house the homeless and that sort of thing, you have to find stuff. How much easier and quicker it is if it's their stuff and all you need to do is take it. And for another, he has minions. And like every evil emperor who promises power, it doesn't matter how many suckers sign up, fail, and fall. There's a waiting line outside.

...Even if you did vote for him, that likely applies anyways. Trump's aiming to end FEMA entirely, either way, despite the fact that it's long benefited Republicans far more than Democrats. Looks like there was yet another move that just happened that moves things towards that goal again.
