Trump's promised ICE raids have begun

Perhaps there was never a marriage. You can't be an in-law if there was no legality involved.
Sure you can. I've never been married but I have in-laws. It's a convenient way to refer to someone without saying "my significant other's parents". Also, I've never been married but my brother has.

Personally I just think it's a way for them to express the relationship in a more clinical fashion to distance Leavitt from the 'criminal', "She's not part of the family, just the Mother of my Nephew"
That's probably more like it. I get a sense of estrangement from the whole situation.

Maybe the people who write news articles feel a need to be more precise in speech, for both accuracy and legal reasons.

Woman associated with Caroline Levitt detained by ICE.

Karoline Leavitt’s nephew’s mother has been detained by US immigration agents in Revere, Massachusetts, as part of the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown.

Bruna Ferreira, a Boston-area resident who migrated with her family to the US from Brazil as a child, is now in custody at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Louisiana, according to the Boston radio station WBUR, which first reported the arrest.

The White House press secretary’s brother, Michael Leavitt, 35, had a relationship with Ferreira, 33, and they had a son, Michael Leavitt Jr, aged 11.

The whole point of "in-law" is to indicate a legal relationship.

Pure speculation here but I have to wonder if this is part of a custody battle. Convenient way to get rid of an inconvenient ex.

Miller: His government is going to accelerate efforts to review every person added to this country over the last four years, all 20 million. Obviously, if you're an illegal you're out automatically, but everybody else who was brought here, refugee, asylum status, whatever status, as he said, if you're not someone who loves this country, if you are not adding benefit to this country we're going to send you out.

Language is always moving on.

Furthermore, language has an uncanny knack for being in many places at once.
And context matters. Coming from a news article it's going to be more carefully precise because they're supposed to be. Arth casually referring to people as his in-laws is fine, nobody's going to sue him for mis-stating a legal relationship. (Unless of course he's trying to claim an inheritance based on a legal relationship that doesn't exist or something.)

Can you call the USA a two-party system, though? That's the real question.

How do these agents sleep at night? Absolute ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊ inhuman filth.
I think being a psychopath is pretty much a prerequisite.
