Trump's promised ICE raids have begun

As I pulled into Little Village for dinner with some local Chicagoans, we experienced no traffic and had our pick of parking spots. “Traffic used to be bumper to bumper for decades and start blocks away, I’ve never experienced it like this,” Chicago food writer Ximena N. Beltran Quan Kiu told me. In a TikTok about the neighborhood, she noted that Little Village is the second-largest shopping district in the city after Michigan Avenue, which is home of the “Magnificent Mile” of luxury stores.

A Mexican restaurant near us closed for a couple of weeks. They're open again, but with some new staff who are much more Anglo and less Hispanic. At least the food and beer are still good.
A block down from mine, there was a pop-up anti-ice protest today. It was a beautiful thing.

Just now in Chicago’s Little Village, ICE agents illegally fired tear gas into the street… again.

As residents filmed, one agent walked out to move them aside. Just as he neared the vehicle, no longer blocked, two other agents fired tear gas, one canister directly at a crowd standing next to the sidewalk, then sped away, nearly hitting a man as they fled.

’s car. When he stepped out coughing, they fired at him again…

BREAKING: In Chicago’s Little Village, ICE agents shot pepper balls into a man
Because apparently it’s harder to be held accountable for assault if you do a drive-by.

They were probably threatened with a lethal burrito. Or a sopes. Or a torta.

5 masked men dressed to "look like" ICE detain their parents—refuse to identify themselves.

"Agent" pointed gun at 15 year old son—tried to take phone when he started filming.

ICE says that it was not their agents—and has no idea who took them.

"When I saw two trucks speed up behind us, that's when I said, 'they're coming,' and I started panicking and shaking," their son said.

No law enforcement agency has claimed responsibility for detaining the couple—despite panicked family members calling everywhere trying to find them.

"Keep in mind my mom has diabetes and has fractured knees, and could have done severe damage."

The incident occurred near the Basilica of Our Lady of San Juan del Valle National Shrine in San Juan, Texas.

Sounds like the sort of ◊◊◊◊ ICE agents are pulling.

If it was Tuesday, and ICE told me it was Tuesday, I would refuse to believe them. They probably have them.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is acquiring powerful new surveillance tools to identify and monitor people.

They include apps that let federal agents point a cell phone at someone's face to potentially identify them and determine their immigration status in the field, and another that can scan irises. Newly licensed software can give "access to vast amounts of location-based data," according to an archive of the website of the company that developed it, and ICE recently revived a previously frozen contract with a company that makes spyware that can hack into cell phones.

The federal agency is also ramping up its social media surveillance, with new AI-driven software contracts, and is considering hiring 24/7 teams of contractors assigned to scouring various databases and platforms like Facebook and TikTok and creating dossiers on users.

Have a nice day.
