But Mr. Sessions could not guarantee that the president would not try to talk to Mr. Comey alone again, the officials said.

In his much-anticipated congressional testimony on Thursday, fired FBI Director James Comey will dispute President Donald Trump's blanket claim that he was told he was not under investigation multiple times, according to sources familiar with Comey's thinking.

Rather, one source said that Comey is expected to tell senators that he never assured Trump he was not under investigation, because such assurances would have been improper. Another source hinted that the President may have misunderstood the exact meaning of Comey's words, especially regarding the FBI's ongoing counterintelligence investigation.

In his letter to Comey firing him, Trump raised the Russia investigation and asserted that: "...I greatly appreciate you informing me, on three separate occasions, that I am not under investigation." The White House has not provided details of when those three conversations allegedly took place.

The nation’s top intelligence official told associates in March that President Trump asked him if he could intervene with then-FBI Director James B. Comey to get the bureau to back off its focus on former national security adviser Michael Flynn in its Russia probe, according to officials.

On March 22, less than a week after being confirmed by the Senate, Director of National Intelligence Daniel Coats attended a briefing at the White House together with officials from several government agencies. As the briefing was wrapping up, Trump asked everyone to leave the room except for Coats and CIA Director Mike Pompeo.

The president then started complaining about the FBI investigation and Comey’s handling of it, said officials familiar with the account Coats gave to associates. Two days earlier, Comey had confirmed in a congressional hearing that the bureau was probing whether Trump’s campaign coordinated with Russia during the 2016 race.

Firstly, let's wait for the actual testimony rather than reports about what the testimony is going to be. If Comey does come out and say it then IMO President Trump has three main lines of defence (though when I typed that it came out as lies of defence ;))

  • Trump can merely insist that he never said that Comey said that he wasn't under investigation. It would be an outright lie where documented evidence to the contrary exists but that hasn't stopped him in the past
  • He could claim that Comey is lying. Who are you going to believe, the much-loved President elected with the biggest electoral college majority, the majority of the popular vote and the largest inauguration crowd ever - or a disgruntled former employee enabled by the fake media ? Sad !
  • He can claim that Comey has misunderstood and that Trump did recieve some specific assurance and Comey is talking in general terms (or vice versa)

IMO the third option is too nuanced so I'm going with a combination of 1 and 2. President Trump will deny he ever made the claim AND that Comey is lying when he refutes the claim.

Said it about this claim in another thread and have been saying it regularly for the last several months - talk is cheap.

When someone senior steps down citing the President's incompetence then that's newsworthy. Until then it's the equivalent of fat blokes in a pub saying that they really ought to get in shape.
 
If your best defence is "his word against mine" you haven't got much.

Six in 10 Americans think Donald Trump fired FBI Director James Comey in order to protect himself rather than for the good of the country, and most think Trump is trying to interfere with official investigations of possible Russian influence in the 2016 election.

A broad seven in 10 in an ABC News/Washington Post poll also doubt Trump’s word on the Russia issue. That said, 55 percent doubt Comey’s word as well -– likely a sign of his own past controversies, as well as general distrust of Washington.

Good morning. There are now several anti Comey adds being run by Super Pacs associated with Donald Trump. Also there have been rumors that Trump has hinted that he may be live tweeting during Comeys testimony. Is there a case to be made that this is an attempt to intimidate or tamper with a witness? Comey is testifying about what lead up to his removal from position. Having his character attacked and potentially facing a public real-time alternative facts laced rebuttal of his testimony by the President of the United States would seem to be somewhat interfering in the process to me.

I have no doubt that the people around Trump are trying to keep him as busy as possible. Like a baby with a busy box. Still, even the preemptive statements that the President "might " be live tweeting during the testimony, like he has already done the last time Comey testified, seems pretty nasty. This isn't just the Fake News or some pundit talking and fact checking Comey's testimony. This would be the President of the USA.
ETA I realize this isn't a criminal trial but remember what happened when Nixon commented during the Manson trial.
