President Donald Trump has ratcheted up the national controversy over black National Football League players who refuse to stand while the U.S. National Anthem is played before games.

"During a Friday night political rally in Alabama, Trump called on fans to boycott teams that allow players to engage in that particular form of protest."

Well this is going to be a ********

We used to have presidents that presidented, instead of getting involved in entertainment industry spats.

Payback is a you-know-what:

Trump bought the [football team] New Jersey Generals after the United States Football Leaugue's inaugural season, which was played in the spring of 1983, and soon after he started pushing his fellow owners to move the league's games to the fall and go head-to-head with the NFL. "If God wanted football in the spring," Trump once said, "he wouldn't have created baseball." After the league's third season, the owners agreed to move to a fall schedule in 1986.

"I think it was a big mistake," said Dr. Ted Diethrich, one of the league's original owners. "When that decision was made, the course for this was charted, and it was going to be a wreck." The league soon folded, and Trump's push for the fall schedule and a lawsuit against the NFL is generally cited as the main reason. link to Sports Illustrated article

He also said the NFL sucks because they are trying to eliminate violent hits. And he did this the same day we found out Aaron Hernandez had a terrible case of CTE.

It's like he tries to find ways to be insensitive.

It's going to be entertaining to watch the usual suspects hand-wave this away while explaining the greatest threat to free speech is coming from the left.

I've been noticing that Trump almost seems to be having fun by making his rabid conservative base take positions that seem so antithetical to their identity.

He's already got them saying "So what if a candidate worked with a hostile foreign power to influence the US election" Now he's got them against football.

Here's my prediction. Maybe not the next target, but some time in the next year, Trump will turn his posse against red meat.

Trump will turn his posse against red meat.

Didn't he basically do that by getting them on board the unpalatable well done steak with ketchup?

This was just him returning to the classics and playing to white racial grievance politics. He was literally addressing a largely white crowd as "people like yourselves," and referring to protesting athletes, mostly African American, as "those people," in this speech.

You almost have to feel sorry for the NFL owners. They can't do what Trump suggests (fire the kneelers) because their agreement with the union prohibits that, and it would ignite a further firestorm.

And yet the more attention paid to the kneelers, the more revenues the NFL loses. And this comes just as the TV ratings were heading lower anyway as everybody cuts the cable, and others are starting to rethink their affection for the game due to the revelations about CTE.

Yeah, for now they still have their existing contracts with television, but I'm going to guess that the bargaining on the next round is going to be brutal for the owners.

And now Trump calls for a boycott if they don't do something about the protests? I'm going to guess that the NFL owners are going to collectively lose a couple billion dollars in market value.

I think the biggest mistake opponents make is thinking the players want to inject politics into football or want to be kneeling.

Trump has a strange history with the National Football League (NFL). In 1984 he told New York Times sportswriter Ira Berkow he, Trump, passed on a chance to buy the Dallas Cowboys:
"There were three or four available -- that still are available, including, of course, the Dallas Cowboys," Trump told Berkow. "I could have bought an NFL club for $40 million or $50 million, but it's established and you would just see it move laterally. Not enough to create there." News link

Trump told Berkow, "I feel sorry for the poor guy who is going to buy the Dallas Cowboys." Five years later, in 1989, the Cowboys were sold for $140 million. By 2016 Forbes was reporting the Cowboys were possibly the most valuable team in sports, with a market value estimated at around $4 billion.

But The Donster was too smart to have wasted his time or money on a team like the Cowboys. Instead he bought the New Jersey Generals of the United States Football League. The team (and league) folded in 1986 and Donnie lost about $10 million. Not too bad, actually. By the Trumpmeister's standards a mere ten million dollar loss is almost a win! ;)

A slight deviation from the OP, but only slightly. So both the NFL and the NBA in the same day? Impressive, Mr. President. In case you haven't seen, he also ''uninvited'' the NBA champion Golden State Warriors from attending the White House, singling out youth icon Stephen Curry in his tweets. Lebron James has gone back at Trump, saying that attending the White House ''was an honor until you showed up''. I will add this to things I never thought I would see the President do, but now have...

One must admire Trump's unflagging support of the First Amendment.

This festering pile of dog **** isn't going to rest until he gets a war of some kind. Nuclear, race, civil war, something.
