Trayvon Martin, Vigilante Justice

What are the requirements for a conceal-carry license Florida? Even if it includes a basic safety course, it might not include any kind of exam in which you have to answer, "Keep my finger off the trigger." I'm not suggesting you're wrong, I'm suggesting that people are ignorant.

Pulp Fiction did a nice job lampooning Hollywood's trope of waving a gun around with your finger still on the trigger when Vincent Vega accidentally shoots Marvin in the backseat. This isn't that, but our Neighborhood Watch guy might have been having a moment of bravado with his finger on the trigger when things went quickly wrong.
Well, look at it this way.

Would anyone with a lick of sense teach a carry permit class without making dammmm sure that every single one of them standing around you knew beyond any doubt to keep their fingers off of the trigger?

Teaching doesn't mean the student was taught. Just because I sat in a calculus class, doesn't mean that I can demonstrate a damn thing Mr. Wright clearly knew inside and out.

I've also sat in "defensive driving" classes with individuals who were clearly just there to get their time in so they could have their revoked licenses back. I'd wager $50 that half of them had to take the class at least one more time.

I bolded the false assumption you're making here :D

And this.

Judging from the initial story, there seem to be quite a few things Mr. Zimmerman didn't glean from his CCW class.

Even if this guy acted in self defence, why did he put himself in a situation where that occured by confronting the guy?
He had already called the police. When we were setting up our block watch we were told in no uncertain terms that the idea was observation, not apprehension. Observe and report. As the officer that was our police liason put it; "This is Block watch, not Block catch.

Yep.

There better be a report of a crime in progress, and a violent one at that. Otherwise, this guy doing Neighborhood WATCH overstepped massively.

Your question wasn't 'did everyone who ever took a class remember every detail', your question was whether it was taught/tested at all.

I gave you a logical way to arrive at rational answer, but I can't make you think.

As far as all permit class instructors (be they police officers, faculty advisors, GMGs, RSOs, or other firearms instructors) having zero sense of safety or even self preservation, I'll leave proving that to those making the extreme assertion.

From what I read there are not enough details as to what actually occurred.

If he (the neighborhood watch guy) was attacked physically, and he was in fear of his life, he MIGHT be let off the hook, but it's doubtful.

If there is no evidence that he was attacked, or in any way had his life threatened, he will end up with 2nd deg. Murder charges.

We'll have to wait and see what comes about. For now, I suspect that this guy was in the wrong.
There is nothing I can find in the news reports that would make this look right, and if there were, you'd think someone would be publicizing it to allay suspicions.

Forgive me for not researching this but:

Is the shooter still in custody?

If not, for how long was the shooter in custody?

In that case, never mind. I’m not interesting in playing this game with you.

I thought that was only a misdemeanor.

The news is covering it pretty heavily, down here but I still haven't heard much more details on what happened. I can't help but wonder what exactly constitutes "suspicious".
My standard is someone not known to me casually wandering around my yard is suspicious (no shoot), a similar person with a weapon is call police (no shoot), that person banging on my door is warn but no shoot,
that person coming through the door is chest head chest drop dead. The theory, if only one person, is you can't survive a proper Mozambiqueing.

Zimmerman admits getting out of his car to confront the victim. The victim was not fleeing and was not attempting to enter anyone's residence. Zimmerman initiated all aggression. Bust the crazy bastard.

Says the person who got a factual and relevant answer to their question, and responded by moving the goal posts.

I suspect you'll find someone who you are interested in playing your games with.

As far as I can find in the media, never.

From the OP:

"At that point, Mr. Zimmerman was taken into custody, investigative detention if you will, and got to the station to conduct an interview with him to find out exactly what happened," Sanford police spokesman Sgt. David Zimmerman said.

I note that the Police Sgt has the same last name as the shooter.

Are they closely related or is it a coincidence?

Can someone confirm that the shooter was immediately released from custody after questioning?

In custody this long would mean an arrest. No report that he was ever arrested.

Investigative custody is when the police stop you long enough to ask questions.

He may have been held for a short while, but there is no indication that lasted any significant length of time, or that he is in custody now.

Interesting catch that.
The more information we get it seems more likely that Mr. Martin was confronted while doing nothing criminal and then shot under highly suspect circumstances.

Apologies for the source:

Zimmerman has been interviewed three times and is cooperating. He is claiming self-defence, even though he was following Martin, police said.
Trayvon Martin was gunned down just yards from his father's home as he made his way back from a shop in the Orlando suburb of Sanford, Florida.
Neighbourhood Watch captain George Zimmerman, 28, has admitted shooting the youngster, but claims it was in self-defence.
As yet, he has not been arrested or charged in connection with the killing.
