TPP Dead in the Water

This is the first thing he's done that I approve of.

Trade deals are, generally speaking, good things. This was not a trade deal, or rather, not just a trade deal. It was practically every corporatism-favoring bad idea that had been bandied about for the last decade, rolled into one secretive, festering pile.

Trump has just made some very powerful enemies.

George W. Bush was the best thing that ever happened to Iran.

And now, Donald J. Trump is on his way to be the best thing that has ever happened to China and to Russia.

Irony is that Trump apparently has it in for China but seems to love Putin and Russia.

Liberals, especially the Sandersistas, were largely opposed to TPP until today.

Aside from the cry baby liberals most rational liberals, me included, still are I'll bet. Trump's opposition to the TPP makes many of my conservative friends say the same thing about him: "He's no conservative".

I think we'll understand what they mean before the year is out.

It's projection, they spent the last 8 years opposing anything Obama agreed with, even if they had previously agreed with it themselves, so they assume that now Democrats are going to do the same with Trump. The idea that they could detest the guy, but agree with something he does is something that is impossible for them to comprehend as they can't function that way themselves.

As far as I can see the TPP was heavily slanted in favour of the US. However it's the other stuff Trump announced that's more worrying. Beside the reinstatement of the Mexico City he has proposed this:

And I'm sure his Blue Collar supporters will cheer, until they realize those regulations were the ones preventing their workplaces being turned into Third World sweatshops.

Those regulations were a trillion dollars of burden a year and decades ago. There was no such thing 50 years ago, when the burden was significantly less.

That's what it looks like t me, but hey it's Trump, leftists have to be for TPP now.

I really had no opinion on it. At the moment, I'm more annoyed with Trump reinstating the global gag rule on birth control.

Yes, I'm going to enjoy listening to them explain their sudden conversion to global free trade.
If only there was a mechanism where everyone in the world could talk with each other, businesses could advertise and trade goods and services internationally and generally avoid physical border issues. Then the TPP would be moot. Wouldn't it. Because all the objections would not exist.

Are you intentionally ignoring reality?

Which one? There's so many to choose from these days. I've twice linked to the only feedback I've seen from prominent Democrats who were opposed to TPP and still are, and I would assume that those who were in favor of it still are. Have you got some alternative facts you'd like to share?

Are you blind? The proof is right here!

But seriously, some 'leftists' were always for the TPP. So now those same people can be held up as examples of 'the left' being for TPP simply because Trumps isn't - even if the majority of liberals still think it was a bad idea.

But not me. I was for the TPP because it made good economic sense, but not now. Now I want closed borders, protectionism, closer ties with other despots, fewer regulations, more CO2 and less equality. The more Trump hurts the country the more I will be cheering him on. Because I hate America!

And not just the US. My personal hope is that Trump will lunch a few nuclear weapons and start WWIII. In short, I want to see the World burn - because that's what we deserve. And when it's all over I will smirk and say to the reality deniers:- 'Told you so!'.

Evidence ?

There was no such thing 50 years ago, when the burden was significantly less.

The world was a very different place 50 years ago, gaping hole in the ozone, choking smog in major cities, a more-or-less lack of customer protection when it came to products (except retrospectively by lawsuit), a lot more workplaces were unionised and so their workers rights were protected that way.

This type of action will make it harder for Trump - sorry I mean the USA - to negotiate other deals - sorry I mean treaties - as anyone who previously negotiated in good faith now knows if Trump - sorry the USA - doesn't like a deal - sorry treaty - it will simply unilaterally break it.

Treaties are agreed on the bases of trust, Trump is showing that other countries can't trust treaties signed by the USA.
