Toxic Food/Products

Toxins in the food we eat and the goods we use. Are they good, bad, or a bit of both? I'm trying to find out where the scientific community stands on this issue but I can't seem to find what I'm looking for with google. Where can I find some credible sources on this?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
The Center for Science in the Public Interest has good section on food additives. http://www.cspinet.org/reports/chemcuisine.htm
It's a good place to start.

Hmmmm..... Not sure if that is science but it sounds like they don't care about having studies that show what they say is true. They are anti-aspartame which makes them look wooish (or maybe that flat out makes them woo). The American Council on Science and Health doesn't think much of them. http://www.acsh.org/

Treating corn with lye or lime is for many reasons. It makes it easire to strip the shell off as well. It also makes it much easier to digest and makes the niacin avialable to people.

Most importantly, corn treated with lime makes tastier tortillas.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest is uncritical: they don't attempt to review or understand any science they mention. For example, they whole-heartedly supported trans fats in the 80's while lobbying against saturated fats. When evidence against trans fats started appearing, they then lobbied against trans fats. In both cases, there wasn't enough evidence to justify the position they took (although by now there are more and better studies which support avoiding trans fats). Still, they do base their positions on published studies, even if they sometimes take the findings too far.

You can always buy organic food where the farmers use natural pesticides like pyrethrum, a proven carcinogen but not to worry: its natural and organic.
Yeah. but it drops cucarachas in their tracks. Only thing better, besides DDT? Mouthwash. I've never seen anything, including a heavy-boot stomp, that kills 'em faster.

(looking around) Maybe that wasn't what the OP was asking. ;)
