Top 5 Skeptical Fallacies

None of this makes much sense considering the fact that you call yourself "the Atheist."

Why what? Did you not read the quote within my post? If you don't get it then I can't help you.

Well, not only did I read it, I also wrote it, and I utterly fail to see what any of it has to do with being (not calling myself) The Atheist.

Please either explain what connection you think there is, or just admit you have no idea what you're typing.

Ah, if only that were the issue.

It isn't, and I've said that several times in this very thread: by all means ask for evidence, most definitely falsify claims, but there is an awful lot of attacking goes on and it's needless and stupid.

If you'd bothered reading some of the tread, you'd be aware of this.

Claiming other posters are ignorant seems to be your favorite insult.

Is it dishonest Saturday or something? I didn't claim they were ignorant.

I said that someone needed to read the thread - that turned out to be 100% correct when the poster admitted they had not.

In the second case, if you can make sense of the gibberish I'm referring to, please feel free to enlighten me.

You really should try reading some of your own posts before lecturing others.

No, I'm serious.

You can obviously understand it, but I'll gladly admit to being a bit thick, which is probably why I can't.

What does being The Atheist have to do with what I've said?

Then you admit you are in over your head and don't understand what's being posted here. In that case your posts are full of sound and fury signifying nothing.

Technically, it's not slang for testicles. It's a real word that means exactly that, it's of Middle English origin. Saying it's slang is like saying "sneakers" is slang for "trainers".

"Balls" isn't slang for "testicles" either, it's just common usage as opposed to medical usage. By the same token, "fingers" isn't slang for "phalanges", and "nose" isn't slang for "proboscis".

People in the UK don't tend to call their balls their bollocks, though. It usually gets used to describe something that's absolutely pants.

Then you don't grasp irony very well, do you? You were harping on about not needing to belittle people who hold "silly" beliefs as it's not important to you, and to do so is sillier than believing in something ridiculous, and yet you went out of your way to call yourself "the Atheist," as opposed to say, "Bob," or "Graham."

You obviously DO want people to know that you take a stance against supposedly silly beliefs, otherwise you wouldn't need to call yourself "the Atheist" on a sceptical forum. That's kind of like me calling myself "Non-Bigfoot Believer." I just found it funny, and it is, it's bloody marvellous.

Even your avatar is an obvious kick in the teeth for religion, which I have no issue with, but don't start jawing on about taking the high-road when you clearly are no different than anybody you're complaining about. In essence, you're chatting bollocks yet again, mate. Well done!

He did, however, refer to 'silly and harmless' beliefs. Religion - at least of the Abrahamic variety - fits the former but not the latter.

Yes, calling oneself 'The Atheist' then spending all your time on the forum kicking atheists in the teeth seems a bit odd.

When it's irony and not a load of nonsense dressed up as irony, I most definitely do.

You were harping on about not needing to belittle people who hold "silly" beliefs as it's not important to you, and to do so is sillier than believing in something ridiculous, and yet you went out of your way to call yourself "the Atheist," as opposed to say, "Bob," or "Graham."

I was fairly sure this is exactly where you were headed, but rather than set fire to a strawman, I wanted you to say it yourself.

You are accusing me of being hypocritical because I'm an atheist. That would be as silly as me suggesting you're a racist because you don't believe in bigfoot.

See, you have three immediate problems with that:

1 What does being The Atheist have to do with belittling anyone?

2 There is a difference between arguing against irrational people and belittling them.

3 As baron notes - and I said earlier in the thread - not all irrational beliefs are created equal.

Isn't it lucky this thread is still about skeptical fallacies!

You obviously DO want people to know that you take a stance against supposedly silly beliefs, otherwise you wouldn't need to call yourself "the Atheist" on a sceptical forum.

While that is plain nonsense, it does show that you have no idea what "atheist" means, which is probably the real problem here.

Atheist - "without god"

It means I do not believe in god.

It does not mean I "stand against religion".

It has nothing whatsoever to do with other irrational beliefs.

That's kind of like me calling myself "Non-Bigfoot Believer." I just found it funny, and it is, it's bloody marvellous.

If I shared your lack of knowledge of both English (meaning of atheist) and logic (making assumptions), I'd probably find it funny, too.

Unfortunately, if your name were "Non-bigfoot believer" I would take from that only that you don't believe in bigfoot.

I wouldn't assume you were an atheist.

I wouldn't assume you weren't an anti-vaxer.

I wouldn't even assume it meant you don't believe in Yowies.

Even your avatar is an obvious kick in the teeth for religion, which I have no issue with, but don't start jawing on about taking the high-road when you clearly are no different than anybody you're complaining about. In essence, you're chatting bollocks yet again, mate. Well done!

Now that we've cleared all of your errors up, you might want to re-think the whole post, because it makes you look very silly.

Your total lack of understanding in this discussion is a joy to behold.

Looks like an answer to me, maybe you cannot comprehend answers that do not fit your preconceptions.

I don't have any preconceptions.

That's possibly why I don't understand the alleged link between atheism and other irrational beliefs. Maybe I should get a few. It's probably going to take less time than waiting for sensible answers to easy questions.

He must be the special kind of atheist, y'know, the one with a neck-beard and a hat like what Joe Strummer wore in 1979, oh, and don't forget the trench-coat! :boggled: "Fight the power!"

Depends how you look at it, many people weren't aware that Bigfootery was essentially about fleecing people, afterall. How do we properly define what is and what isn't harmless?
