High Spirits with Shirley Ghostman
Tue 1 Mar, 9:30 pmÂ_-Â_10:00 pmÂ_Â_30mins

New comedy series. Marc Wootton plays Shirley Ghostman, close personal friend of every dead celebrity you care to mention and performer of jaw-dropping psychic feats. However, Marc is the only actor in the show - everyone else, even the studio audience, believes that Shirley is the real deal.

Shirley promises to astound his audience with his powers and channels the spirit of none other than Princess Diana. Plus it's week one of Spirit Academy - Shirley's search for the most promising psychic in the UK.

*******

Should be cringe-makingly funny!
(Sorry - I know this has been posted already - just not so much detail & also, I didn't remember seeing a broadcast date/time for it before?)

The thing about that Inquirer article is, it looks like they got the wrong idea about the programme's intentions. The sceptics seem to be claming victory because they were not fooled by the ludicrous medium.

But from the description of the show (and granted we have not even seen it yet), it seems to be mocking mediums, not sceptics. If the live audience was unaware that Wootton was spoofing the genre, it has more potential to embarrass the believers than the sceptics who, let's face it, are used to spotting far more subtle frauds.

Some critical thinkers thought a man in a wig was fake? And that's worth crowing about? If Chris French had been fooled, THEN it would have been a news story.

I've just laughed myself stoopid.

At last, someone has taken the whole spiritualist field and lampooned the bejeesus out of it!!!

The best bit were the interviews at the end, priceless.....

Honestly, the funniest bit of telly for ages, I can't wait for all the complaints from the 'real' mediums....

Bugger, bugger, bugger! I've just missed it.

Please post if it is repeated at all.

Ashles I've taped it (on the same time as Crime Scene Investigation, I'm an addict) so if you PM me I'm gladly post you the tape if you want it? mind you I think it's on each week?.

Never belly laughed so much in a long time. I hope, each week, for those who watch it we could post our fav part?

Mine this week was when he said he was going into 'trance medium mode( he was becomming Lady Di) and then told everyone 'shush-ie'. I do understand you would have had to have watched it to understand why it was so funny. Laugh? I tell you, till the cows come home. excellent programme.

I don't have access to cable at the moment so if anyone will allow me to borrow a tape I'd be grateful. All costs will be reimbursed. :)

Just remembered possibly the most revealing moment of the show...

Shirley goes to his tailors to get a suit made. He's talking to the staff (two women) about one of the other members of staff.

The guy they're talking about is going to get married and he takes a flyer saying "It's a mistake, he shouldn't marry her" etc.

Later, he's talking to the guy and he tells Shirley about the wedding and that they've been together for two years.

A few minutes later, Shirley is alone with the two other women and he says (all 'matter of fact') that the guy has been with his girlfriend for two years. One of the women is astounded that he should know this and is visibly taken aback!

Brilliant, just brilliant.

That is really funny.

Spirit Academy (a sort of psychic Pop Idol) is absolutely hilarious.
Shirley gives little psychic tests to the applicants.
In one section he gives them a teapot and asks them what it's for:

Shirley: What do you think it's used for?

Woman 1: A television show?

Woman 2: It was an ornament... in a house... quite recently...

Woman 1 (looks like she's about to try to smell the teapot in frustration)

Shirley: Just your gut reaction, what's it used for

Woman 1: Somewhere important

Shirley: Right n- what was it used for

Woman 2: It was used to advertise something?

Shirley (quite strident): What was it used for?

Woman 1 (still holding the teapot): Making coffee

Shirley: You're very close okay but it involves tea leaves

(Woman 1 wrinkles brow in thought. Doesn't say anything)

Then Shirley tells them what they are thinking of. Note, not TRIES to tell them, but actually tells them:

Shirley: What you thinking?

Woman 3: Eeerm I'm thinking this is more difficult than I thought it was gonna be

Shirley: Okay, no you're not, what are you thinking now?

Woman 3 (nervous now): I'm thinking I'm hungry

Shirley: Swimming

Woman 3 (very thrown): Swimming mmm, am I?

Shirley: Is that what you're thinking about? Swimming?

Woman: (long errm) Yeah there's a bit of it yeah

Shirley: Alright fantastic

Shirley (to Woman 1 again): What you thinking?

(Woman 1 doesn't reply)

Shirley (more strident): What you thinking of?

(Woman 1 shakes her head silently looking bemused and nervous, looking for help)

Shirley (almost shouting): Just say what you're thinking of!

(Woman 1 continues to stand there silent)

Shirley: The beach

Woman 1: Well sort of but close but not actually the beach-

Shirley (interrupts): Were you thinking of a donkey ride on a beach?

Woman 1: Yeah I was thinking of a donk-

Shirley (interrupts): You're through to the second round

(Woman 1 jumps up and dopwn and runs from the room ecstatic)

Woman 1 (being interviewed outside): I was thinking of being on this donkey and he said to me 'I know what you're thinking of'

This is a funny show. And what Shirley channels Princess Diana saying about the Queen is priceless

What about the "House band" Lol.Hitler,Diana,Ghandi on drums!!
The pet Psychic sketch was cringeworthy, but funny SG:"Just sit them down and say "Do you like water sports" come straight out with it,clear the air"
SG "Youve removed his(dog's)...you know,..havent you?"
Woman:"Yes"
SG"He misses licking his balls,so if you have a partner..perhaps you could try it."
[Paraphrased due to bad memory]
;)
SG:"Its cardiovascular...or anuerysim(sp?)or he might have been charged by a hippo!"
I could go on...:D

Shirley Ghostman "The only other person who can contact as many dead celebs as me...is the guest booker on Des and Mel!"
:D :D :D

Very funny but absolutely terrifying (if the audience and participants were "real").

The Spirit Academy - most of the people they showed were out and out liars!

Strong word but there is no other word to describe what they were doing, they knew it didn’t make sense, they knew they weren’t “predicting” anything and so on. Plus there was collusion (that was almost too blatent to be called collusion!). One of them pretended to be hypnotised by Shirley and then Shirley put a toy train into a box in front of him, (making a train noise as well) and then when the guy pretended to "flinch" when Shirley told him to "wake up". The guy then "successfully" identified it was train in the box! This bloke knew he was making it it up, he knew he had seen the train and heard it and yet still participated and acted as if it was amazing he identified the train.

The ones on this programme were shown not only to be self-deluded but also willing to participate in deluded, lying behaviour. I know editing can create many false impressions but from what was shown I've seriously reconsidered some of my more "charitable" thoughts about some people who say they believe they have psychic powers. E.g. they are out and out liars who for whatever reason want others to think they have magic powers and they don’t care how they go about it. These people are not “genuinely” self-deluded, they are not mistaken or have just failed to apply critical thinking they are deceitful, manipulative and liars.

I was genuinely shocked.
