Today's Mass Shooting

<snip>

I may have some details wrong. All of these incidents of mass murders of strangers all blend together. I think there was only one mass shooting at a church in Texas. The other big random mass shooting at a church was in Tennessee. And of course there was the massacre perpetrated in a church by Dylan Roof, but that wasn't just some random spree shooting attacking strangers. That one had a specific motivation so that's in a different category. There was the Pittsburgh area synagogue, but synagogues aren't churches, so I couldn't be confusing that one.

Don't feel lonely.

Consider this;

Just a few days ago a Tennessee news anchor became confused about which local school shooting she was reporting on while she was reporting on them.

Such was the case in Tennessee on Monday. Details are still emerging, but we know that one student was killed and an officer injured after a student opened fire at Knoxville's Austin East High School.

One local news anchor was covering the incident, believing footage of a police helicopter to be pre-taped—until she learned the footage was live, and that there'd been another shooting a short distance away from the school.

Watch below.

The anchor said:

"I forgot about the other shooting. This is actually live, this is not our taped footage from Austin-East High School earlier. The Knox County Sheriff's Office has got their helicopter back in the air because again, we do have that other shooting investigation now underway about a mile away from the High School."

The short clip said a lot about the United States.

There's no better tagline to America than "I forgot about the other shooting" https://t.co/sBJMlaCayt

Okay so our score is:

Bad Guys with Guns, including the police, 45+ in the last month alone.

Good Guys with Guns, that guy who shot the rabid bobcat after yeeting it across the yard.

The majority view among workers after the attack at FedEx Ground last night seems to be "we need guns in the workplace".

I don't see how practical that is in a warehouse environment. If I'd trust anyone to be the good guy with a gun it'd be my ex-marine manager.

That's the attitude I'll never understand.
A former co-worker took out his grudges against the company by getting a gun and shooting people and the reaction is: "Lets make sure the next one will have his/her gun already in place so they don't have to go home to get one once they snap"

Isn't that the whole American argument for guns?

I think it's just invoking good 'ol folksy wisdom to avoid feeling resigned to this emerging problem. I'll bring my gun, problem solved. Both the rural transplants and inner city African American employees are happy with the idea.

Don't you see? That's why there needs to be MORE good guys with MORE guns at the ready. Obviously the FedEx shooter had an advantage because guns are illegal on the floor. It would never had happened if all workers had been carrying...

CNN: Hole's mother told law enforcement in March 2020 he might try to attempt "suicide by cop," the FBI's Indianapolis office said in a statement. Hole was placed on an "immediate detention mental health temporary hold" by Indianapolis police, Keenan said in the statement, and a shotgun was seized at his home. "Based on items observed in the suspect's bedroom at that time, he was interviewed by the FBI in April 2020," the statement said. "No Racially Motivated Violent Extremism (RMVE) ideology was identified during the course of the assessment and no criminal violation was found. The shotgun was not returned to the suspect."

Why are Mass Shootings skyrocketing?
This is hte most important question, and IMHO is being ignored because there is no political hay to be made by ezploring it.
Difficult to say; worsening mental health supports, lack of social engagement, perceived life failure. Hopefully the Republicans cannot block the CDC investigating such causes any more.

45 mass shootings this month, 147 this year, based on the ≥4 persons shot criteria.

Peh. Only three? Not an "official mass shooting", then?

There were a couple of wounded as well, so it's back on the list.

Or, I might be getting it confused with one in Wisconsin with 3 dead and 2 wounded.

ETA: I looked it up. The Austin shooting had 3 dead, no injuries. So it is not a mass shooting at all. Maybe we should report the post for being off topic. In Kenosha, there were 3 dead and 2 wounded, so it's a mass shooting.

At the behest of his family. He was rated by authorities as being a danger to others and himself if he had a firearm. And yet there were no red flags raised when he went and bought the two semi-autos...

There were red flags, but unfortunately, since the background checks for buying people killers* in the US are laughably inadequate, those red flags didn't show up.

*Note: that is what assault weapons are, people killers. Unlike hunting rifles and shotguns, AR-15s and other assault weapons are designed for the sole purpose of allowing humans to kill other humans in large numbers, and a short period of time.
