Today's Mass Shooting

Everywhere in that link where it says "none" for "Background Check When Seller Is Not a Licensed Dealer" is wrong. The states are not exempt from the NFA bkgd check requirements even for a private sale.

That is only for NFA weapons though. Normal guns of course none certainly is correct.

Today: Mandan, North Dakota.....maybe.

Police have released the names of four dead people, so we definitely have the "mass" part, but they still haven't said whether we have the "shooting" part, because police won't say how they died. It's pretty rare to kill four through any means other than shooting, and there was no swimming pool in the office where they were found, so I really don't know what to make of it.

The secrecy and the things the police are not saying is kind of odd.
It happens sometimes that police will intentionally not report certain details of unsolved crimes and often it's murder or homicide.

My understanding is that this is generally done for three reasons:

1) They want to create an obstacle for false confessors. Crazy people will claim that they are the murderer but then be unable to provide necessary details to show that they did it or were there only because those details were not publicly reported.

2) They want to qualify and prioritize leads and tips. Again they want the (tip) claimant to provide some details that aren't already known to the public. This is not necessarily to reject tips but instead to have a means of calling some tips "hot" or more worthy. It can speed up the investigation and result in a quicker arrest.

3) They don't yet actually know certain details and might require a coroner's report or other forensic determinations.

Chiropractor, 44, is arrested on suspicion of shooting and stabbing to death property managers of mobile-home park where he lived

Daily Mail said:
A chiropractor suspected of killing four people at a property management business in North Dakota on Monday was due in court Friday.

Security video at the business helped police identify the suspect who is accused of having 'shot and/or stabbed' the victims, officials said. Tips from the public also helped them identify the suspect who lives in a mobile-home park managed by RJR about 35 miles north of Mandan in Washburn, police said.

'Many hours of video surveillance were reviewed by investigators and a suspect vehicle was identified,' law enforcement said in a statement. 'Further investigation led to McLean County Sheriff’s Office locating the vehicle in Washburn. 'McLean County Deputies conducted a traffic stop on the suspect vehicle and detained Isaak while a search warrant was executed on the vehicle. Evidence discovered on Isaak and in the vehicle provided probable cause to place Isaak under arrest for the murders.'

According to a nearby bowling alley manager, Darin Helbling, police viewed his security video which faces the murder scene. Footage reportedly showed a truck pulling into the parking area that morning and four minutes later a maintenance truck from the company left. Helbling claimed no other vehicles were spotted until police arrived...

3 dead, 2 police officers injured after day-long hostage standoff in Atlanta Georgia

ABC News said:
Three people are dead, including an alleged hostage taker, after a day-long standoff in Georgia. A pregnant woman and her teenage son were killed, according to Atlanta ABC affiliate WSB.

Two police officers were also injured in the incident, authorities said. The standoff, which began just before 11 a.m. in Henry County, a southeast suburb of Atlanta, crawled on for 15 hours before police entered the home and found three people dead inside, WSB reported.

The two police officers were shot when they responded to the home Thursday morning. Both are in stable condition at Grady Memorial Hospital. One officer was shot in the hand and another was struck in the hip, police said.

Authorities had been hopeful the suspect, who had taken a teenager hostage inside the home, would release him. The sister of the pregnant woman told WSB she had found her dead and called police, triggering the standoff. "We're hoping he was going release the 16-year-old. He said he would, and we're just standing by waiting," Henry County Police Capt. Joey Smith told WSB while the standoff continued Thursday night...

And now we have 2 dead and 4 injured at University of North Carolina's Charlotte campus.
Not sure what we decided about this thread. It might need more than 2 dead to be a "Mass Shooting". But still, 6 people hit by a shooter is mass.

Y'know, these "illegal MS13 Muslim Mexican Coyotes" don't need to sneak into America to "murder our true US citizens". The "true US citizens" seem to be doing a good enough job of it all by themselves.

This has been revised - he killed 7 people.
I'm not surprised this appears to have been at least partly a domestic violence issue.

Multiple people killed at a school or workplace, big news. But if it's connected to DV the cases are much lower profile. Murdering family members often doesn't draw national attention.

ETA: Kind of like stranger danger - we emphasize those relatively rare cases compared to the much more common abuse within homes and/by acquaintances.

But the synagogue killing of one person is holding the headlines, and some people might not even know about this other murder spree.

I think that, in the UK anyway, it needs to be a quiet news day and at least a few months has passed since the last report of a mass shooting, before a shooting in the USA gets reported.

I was surprised that the synagogue shooting made headlines on the BBC. It was not notably newsworthy compared to other shootings, but we do need a break from Brexit headlines.

Daily Mail reports that both shooters are students at the school. One is older than 18 and the other is younger.

Everyone seems to always want to talk about the politics and ideology of mass shooters. Daily Mail reports that at least one of these shooters is a Liberal, Democrat and Trump hater. But that's pretty common anyway.

Denver Channel reports that the other shooter was in the process of transitioning from female to male.
