As an update, I managed to solve the problem correctly and was accepted to the team. Great thanks to all of you for your help. If all goes well, some two years from now I'll be attempting to publish my first paper.

In the meantime, I've got a few hundred papers worth of literature review to do. I wonder what I've gotten myself into.
