Time for a single-player adventure game

The last single-player adventure-style game I played was Myst. I'm in the mood for another such game, but I need recommendations. I know that adventure games have been largely replaced with shooter games, so perhaps there aren't many choices. I don't mind some shooting, but I like the adventure aspects much more. It's also nice if the puzzles that need solving aren't totally arbitrary.

I have an oomphy PC running XP with a 30" monitor and an ATI FirePro V3750 graphics card. I don't mind paying some money for the game.

Portal may be a bit too puzzle-oriented for you, but it's one of the best games from last decade. It's moderately short (6-10 hours), and cheap ($5). Worth a look at least.

Telltalegames make a ton of these, still, and they're all great, if you like the classic point-and-click cartoony style games.

All the Sam 'N Max's, the Back to the Future series, and the new Hector, and of course the Monkey Island series. Take your pick. http://www.telltalegames.com

Skyrim has lots of puzzle-solving, but you have to go looking for it. Go for Skyrim if you want story.

I'd definitely suggest Portal (and Portal 2) if it's puzzles you want rather than shooting. Portal I think is possibly the closest to Myst in the last few years.

Go to bigfishgames.com. They have a seemingly infinite supply, and you can get an hour playing each for free. Many rely on hidden object scenes, but a few are classic graphical adventures.

Each is fairly short. I find I can do them in an evening, whereas Myst took me four.

For proper adventure games, definitely this:

Alternatively, get Steam and have a look through their adventure genre. There's an absolute ton of indie games being released through Steam these days, so that's the most likely place to find adventure games since the more mainstream studios aren't making them. They certainly have the whole Sam & Max series (the new Telltale Games ones that is, not sure about the original), and there will be a huge number that you'd probably never hear of unless you went looking for them.

Good Old Games has plenty of old/classic adventure games in their library (including the sequels to Myst, in case you haven't played all of them. As well as a stated goal to not have -any- of that stupid DRM crap in their games.

What? No mention of DreamCatcher/The Adventure Company's fine selection of graphical adventures?

:D :D :D

If what you are used to are games like MYST don't get Skyrim. It's not exactly a first person shooter but it is pretty close. Puzzle games like MYST have not been terribly popular in the USA lately but fortunately there are still a number of European companies that put out good ones. Plus you can always look at all the older games that have come out since MYST including MYST's sequels.
