I love that period of time before they had computers to do initial design testing, so they had to actually build and try fly every design they came up with.

Man they came up with some insane stuff.

What do Army Contractors do? Are they supposed to be particularily smart? Like, smart enough to figure out that a coin with a bright red poppy is going to stand out like crazy and would be a bad choice for covert surveillance purposes? Nah, guess not.

It appears that the problem was with someone in the DoD blowing it out of proportion.

Apparently the poppies have a clear layered coating that has some suspicious features, and reacts to UV light. The contractors merely reported it as suspicious - as all contractors in sensitive projects should.

The mistake occurred when the DoD published a report saying they were surveillance devices, without having ever actually examined one of the coins.

I think the contractors did the right thing in these circumstances.

What I can't figure out is, if there were concerns about the coins, why didn't they first contact the Canadian mint to see what they had to say about it? After all, they're the ones making the coins for distribution, so they'd know better than anyone if the coins were looking and feeling the way they were intended to.

On a serious note, I found the coins to be a touching and well deserved tribute to fallen Canadian soldiers and it burns my (rule 8) that some dionks have tarnished this with their idiocy.

US DoD must have been going out of their freakin' collective minds wondering how in God's name they could get a hold of several of these coins in order to study them. After all travel to and from Canada is so very fraught with danger.
 
Tim Horton was clearly a terrorist, or at least a gov't operative. That is obviously why the USG had him killed in an, ahem, "accident" while he was playing for the Buffalo Sabres and travelling between Toronto and Buffalo.

It's no coincidence that these coins were distributed via Tim Hortons coffee shops nearly thirty years after hist death...

Well, that's true enough, we can be an unpleasant lot at times. You should see our nuclear-powered moose and our cruise missile beavers and our... uh, wait, forget I said that.
 
I am glad some of you found this as amusing as I did. :) I sure am enjoying the comments in this thread. It makes a nice break from the serious stuff (and stupid stuff by CTers) usually found in this sub-forum.
