In defence of Jersey's Senator Freddie Cohen, I think Randi missed the point with his line ... "That silence you hear from Mr. Langlois and from Senator Freddie Cohen is likely to continue. It is the defence-of-choice that superstition has over reason."

It seems to me that the senator was the one who believed the geologists and drafted a law in response to their findings, but the rest of the members over-ruled him and he had to withdraw this law. Freddie is a "good guy" here - he is currently hoping that two bore holes will convince his colleagues of the serious of the problem that is being poo-poo'd by the dowser - he just needs a bit of support to prove Langlois is talking out of his ar$e ...

Yep. I popped in here to start a thread on the same point. Hopefully someone with access to Randi will read this. He's confused himself. Freddie Cohen's the anti-woo here.

I don't know if you can edit thread titles kieran, but you might want to think about changing the title of this thread to something a bit more to descriptive and blunt ("Randi makes mistake in Jersey dowsing commentary"). It might help with someone in the right position picking up on the point. The existing thread title could be taken as just being a general discussion, and might be less likely to result in the error being picked up and corrected.

Just logged in to point out the same thing. Good to see so many others noticed, and I'm sure it will be corrected (probably with a quick apology in the next commentary as well).

Anyways, glad to see everyone's on the ball in noticing the error :)

It would seem there's another error.

The Extra-Strength waxy stick was at 12X and 6X “dilutions,” so the “regular” would probably be at 13X and 7X, which in the wacky world of homeopathy means ten times the amount of “active” ingredients

In homeopathy, a step of 1C means 1 part of material being diluted with 99 parts of solvent. Not 1 against 10.

Yes, but Randi is talking about "x" potencies, which denote 1 part in 10. X potencies are used in homeopathy as well as C potencies, it's not an error.

Just read the commentary a minute ago, and this one story stood out to me too. Cohen is not one of the woo's, he's just trying to show his colleauges how effing wrong the dowser is and that the emrgency bill is apropriate.

Obviously I wasnt the only one Picking that one up =)
