The Y chromosome and genetics

Hehe according to the shady shadow man I've gotten the above totally wrong :)

Here is his version of events:
Well... one of us has a poor memory then Because I remember it being when they were Iceman's house with his parents. The mom said something like "This is all my fault" (as if there is something wrong with having a mutant son :rolleyes and then Pyro (sp? the 'bad' mutant who could control fire and ends up going with Magneto) says "Actually they found it's the father who is responsible for passing it on" (or something to that effect) "so it's his fault" and points to Iceman's dad.

Or at least that's how I remember it

Between you and me - he is most likely correct :p

Oh and BillyJoe thank you for your succinct and easy to understand explanation - I appreciate it - plus the correction on XXY men :)

Plus thanks everyone else - there's some interesting stuff here :)

Oh, yeah... I do remember that at Bobby Drake's house. Was a throwaway line that apparently my brain threw away. :D

Thanks :)

But, using cartoon science, couldn't the X-gene, not to be confused with the X-chromosome, be, in some way, detrimental to the egg, but not a sperm or the embryo. So it's not actually passed only to sons, but any female-unfertilized egg expressing the gene is non-viable.
Sorry, I don't understand the question, bjornart.

re XXY

Sou,

Actually, I think that it is possible for an XXY to have a female phenotype. I think the IOC screens female athletes for this reason. I think Klinefelter's Syndrome is applied only to those with the XXY genotype who have a male phenotype.

I would do a google to confirm this but I know you don't go for that ;)

BillyJoe.

Let's say you have genes M and X, where M is the mundane, and X is, well, the X-gene.
A mutant then has the pair MX. Eggs and sperm will have either M or X present. Now if X for some reason is harmful to the unfertilized egg, but not to the sperm or the embryo/fertilized egg, a woman will not be able to pass on her X-gene, but a man could. I don't know how much, if any, activity goes on in the unfertilized egg, but it's at least possible enough to use in comics. ;)

Actually I'm more of a googler these days ;)

Here's a link about a female XXY - they seem pretty rare though:

XXY female (just the top bit)

And I guess I should confess that the original article was about a book postulating that Jesus was an XXY female (in light of your information this now seems even more fantastical than it seemed at the time:p) . It caught my eye and stuck in my mind even though I must have read it a good 15 years or so ago :)

Earthborne mentioned the IOC further up the thread - although the reference there is to XY females - genetically male but due to 'androgen resistance' physiologically female.

From the link provided by Earthborne

there was one basic problem which made the test unreliable: some XX individuals are not really females, and some XY athletes (who thus possess the 'male' chromosomal make-up) are not really males. For example, some individuals with the XY composition (who would be classified as 'males' by the buccal-smear test) have a condition called 'androgen resistance' which makes them immune to the sexual-developing and strength-promoting qualities of testosterone and leaves them physiologically - if not genetically - females. These athletes, although unassailably female, would fail the buccal test (since they did not possess the double-X chromosomal configuration) and could thus be disqualified from competing against other females at the Olympics.

There's more interesting stuff there about XXY males too :)
