[By 2030]"We'll also see the last of diseases like elephantiasis, river blindness, and blinding trachoma, which disable tens of millions of people in poor countries. The drugs that can stop these scourges are now being donated in huge numbers by pharmaceutical companies, and they're being used more strategically thanks to advances in digital maps that show where diseases are most prevalent. Last year these free medicines were distributed to 800 million people."

This, plus much more global good news in the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Annual Letter 2015.

Awesome.

If only we could spend as much as has been on ebola on malaria

I think the future of solving these various scourges lies in the genetic mapping of the DNA of these horrible contagions.

Edited to say, yes, money helps.

Good news? :) Swell!

But...but... what can we do with that? Where are all the lurid anecdotes about furries? :( Where's the arguement?

There's a reason that they have picked the diseases they picked. By spending sufficient money, they can be eradicated off the face of the Earth. Gone.

Both Ebola and Malaria are zoonotic. You can fight it as long and hard as you want, but they'll always be reservoirs of disease out there.

And ebola happened to affect white middle class people.in the west.

Meanwhile malaria kills at least x100 more people and no charity singles

The letter says this about malaria:

"We won't be able to completely eradicate malaria by 2030, but we will have all the tools we need to do so. These will include a vaccine that prevents people with malaria from spreading it to the mosquitoes that bite them, a single-dose cure that clears the parasite completely out of peoples' bodies, and a diagnostic test that can reveal right away whether a person is infected. Early versions of all these tools are in development now. In 15 years, we'll be poised to send malaria the way of smallpox and polio."

If we are talking money, the order of these 3 things are wrong. It should be Detection, Cure, Prevention. Not like it that quote. And I have no idea how close we are to any of those.

Wonder if the dead malaria people knew it was xmas time

Apologies.

Apologies. I shouldnt be so cynical

What will serve to control population growth in place of these diseases?

It's a combination of things.

Mobile banking + cheaper technology leads to more money and more time for women's education.

Better women's education means a lower or replacement birth rate.

It's already happened in the West. It will happen in Africa.

Everyone wants a shiny new information toy. :)

I think in some places the concern is about population decline. A disease-free, ultra-low population Earth is part of my idea of Utopia.
